Look Green Day's always been political. Shall I give you the history of Green Day? It's too large to mention how they got their political views, but just for a minute, isn't it possible to be a liberal and not bash Bush? Such scandal! Look, the reason they didn't come forth with their views in the 90's is simple: The Clinton Administration. Dems were in power, life was good, Green Day whacked off and sang about it. Now for the first time in Green Day history, Republicans are in power, and that seems like a good a time as any to start saying: Don't listen to this bullshit, you have the power. Why is this such a big deal? Mike Dirnt is the son of a Native American woman who, like so many out there, got screwed by Bush Sr. He hates Republicans and always has. American Idiot came out just before Bush beat Kerry, so isn't it possible Green Day were trying to get some teens to stop and think for a second instead of doing exactly what their parents have done for 40 years? It's ok to be political, and it's never to late to say fuck you.

No, I am centered. Come on. raise a valid point. I dare you.
Okay. You take things way too seriously. There's your valid point.
On a more serious note, most of my arguing in this thread has been playing devil's advocate, and for some reason you seem to be getting very excitable over it.
There were a couple points I was truly adamant about my stance such as the blatant misuse of the term sell out. But for the most part, I'm playing the devil's advocate very few others wish to be... That and putting stupid people in their place, but I've been doing that for years.
On the topic of politics, it's actually a very broad term. It doesn't apply strictly to which political party you decided to vote for. One's personal politics are made up of your beliefs in social and economic issues. It gets very deep and complex very quickly. That said, I prefer to give everyone the benefit of the doubt in the issue. Just because one person I know believes in capitalism and the other in socialism doesn't mean I'm going to treat them any differently. As a matter of fact, it's only the extremists I try to avoid because I'd rather not get into a fight with people as ardent as them.
And in regards to my bringing the whole thing up, I was just making a point that the band have personal politics, just like the rest of the world. They are politically active individuals, which is more than can be said for bandwagon jumpers who buy an anti-Bush T-shirt and make bad Nazi analogies.
I don't know any of the band members personally. But from what I know of what had been going on with them around the turn of the millennium, it doesn't seem that unlikely that they'd try a different approach than previously.
Conversely, you don't know them either. But you don't seem to have the same level of information I do because being a non-fan you never really followed their career that much.
Are you familiar with their side-project The Network? It was recorded and released in 2004 and several of the songs covered social and political topics. But they never really did that much promotion for it. They instead made something of a joke out of the whole thing. Now... if they were hopping on the political bandwagon in order to make more money... don't you think they would have pushed this side-project a little harder because of its socio-political content? This Message Edited On 04.16.06

I made it clear that donations can be politically oriented, but donations to charities that focus on repair, food, clothing, shelter are apolitical. Unless the charity group is actively supporting (financially) political parties, which would be a gross misappropriation of funds, and would more than likely be prosecuted if it considered itself a charity according to the government.
Yeah I know that. You seem to be confusing the act of donating with the act of charity. donating =/= charity.
There are many charity and amnesty groups that work in the 3rd world. Often of times, these groups are in certain regions that have be sabotaged by irresponsible political agendas and government. As a result they are doing something relative to the politics of anothers.

I don't think donating to tsunami victims falls into any political category.. I mean, really.. Is there any recognizable opposition to donations?
No, its not the issue of opposing the act specifically. There will be debate as to how the funds are raised and how they should be allocated. Also, some people can oppose donating to victims. I know many people who feel that the people of New Orleans for example brought their tragedies upon themselves because they chose to live in New Orleans (as retarded as it sounds).
Also, it can be politically opposed if you consider the aspect that many people find that donating is the "hip" thing to do now. This Message Edited On 04.16.06

Bear in mind that aside from a few social issues such as apathy and social anxiety, Green Day didn't really cover much in the way of socio-political issues. In an interview, Billy Joe commented that he just enjoyed writing sad songs more than happy ones, most of which were based on personal memories. Basically a personal catharsis. He then laughed and commented that because of that writing style, his wife's pet name for him is "Eeyore."
Around the turn of the millennium, the group was going through a lot of infighting. They were on the verge of breaking up and sat down to talk and work things out, considering that they'd been close friends for so long. They decided to try a more mature approach to their music, but used The Network as a side project with which they could still have fun by playing New Wave which all three of them were big fans of growing up. They could direct their less weighty songwriting there and didn't have to worry about doing better than breaking even with it.
In other words, this is the first time they've ventured into this sort of musical territory, and I think it shows in that they haven't quite gotten used to the change.
Politics does not have to be defined entirely by opposition. It's simply your beliefs in social and economic issues. Even your religion is part of your personal politics because of how it influences your perception of values. It is impossible not to possess some level of personal politics.
And as for the simple remark, simple music is not inherently bad. Look at nursery rhymes. Those are so simple, kindergarteners know the melodies and lyrics. But they remain some of the most enduring songs in history. The Ramones, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, early Beatles... the list of simple music goes on. Granted, this is certainly far from Green Day's best record, but when's the last time you heard people on the street whistling the melody to a John Petrucci solo?

and bear in mind that simpler music, like pop, often has a stronger inherent social value in uniting communities and instilling shared beliefs among separate individuals.

Oh Jesus. This isn't even a decent warm-up.
Let's just go to the old standard of: prove it. If you are a better songwriter then BJA, then put your bullshit where your mouth is and send me an mp3 of your cutting edge hit single of tomorrow.
Also, I would like to take this opportunity to say that you have a screenname based on Metallica. You have no business complaining about the quality of anybody's music.

ok yeah first off i'm new here so I don't know how to do that quote dealy. So yeah i did that wrong. But anyways steerpike said that. Anyhwo, i haven't actually recorded any of my recent work, but i would be more than happy to send you a tab for some of newer stuff, and you can play it yourself. I'm currently working on a mostly finger picked piece that yes has more than 4 notes in it. So e-mail be at "barr-008@hotmail.com" and i'll send you a tab for that. Also if you like you could visit "purevolume.com/nothingoutofcontrol" it's an old band i was in i'm not sure if any of my music is actually still on there
Now, different issue. I don't think you have any business dissin Metallica when your a Green Day fan. I would soo love to see BJA try and beat kirk hammet on guitar, or James Hetfield for that matter. They would both wreck him and every one here knows. Hell i bet there bassist (Rob Trujillo) could take armstrong in a guitar off. Although i do have to admit you were right to question Metallica's musical abilities after St. Anger i won't be the first to admit it wasn't great. But look back at some of there older stuff, and not just their more popular songs, check out "My Friend Of Misery", The Call Of The Ktulu" "The God That Failed" i could go on further but i'm not gonna waste peoples time naming a bunch of songs. Anways moving on, when you look back at these songs you'll see some genius riffs, killer solos. Not to mention a few good bass intros. If you look back to greendays older albums, what are you gonna see? The same 4 chord bullshit exscuses for songs that they're still writing today. See i can back my shit up just like the rest of yea

Metal:Metallica::Pop Punk:Green Day. They both had large influences on both of their genres, which are completely different, so don't compare the two.
And no one cares about tabs. If you dont have any recordings, either put up or shut up.

Yeah, still don't know how to work the quote thing. Anyways Iluvatar said that.
Fine, I agree with you enough with the comparison of Metallica and Green day. But dude give me a break. I'm 13 i don't have anything to record with i don't even have one of those little microphones that plug into the computer. The best i can do is record onto a cassette and i cant get that on my computer. But like i said check "www.purevolume.com/nothingoutofcontrol"
even though i'm pretty sure there's no music left in that site. I'll also try seeing if any old band members have any recordings left, but i doubt that. And if all else fails i suppose i could go get one of those microphone dealys download a recording thing and record, but i'm on a quite fixed income of $48 every two weeks for papers and half of that goes in the bank, plus i live in a small town and they don't sell those microphones in it so i'll have to make an out of town trip. so its will take me about two-three weeks to be able to send you a recording. Right now i can send you an unfinished tab, thats it

| | | Sanitarium is still metal, it's just a metal ballad. You can't define a band's style or genre song-to-song, you have to consider their body of work as a whole. And Metallica = Metal.
And there's an obvious difference between Kill 'Em All and all their other albums because it was their first album and not many people knew them, so they had no-one's expectations but their own placed upon them.
Anyway, I'm not having a go at you or anything, I'm just trying to explain my point of view.

fair enough. anways i'm gonna leave now i ask that out of respect (even though i don't really deserve too much respect being a newbie) you guys not write anything more about anything i said. As i won't be here to defend myself.
