I like this a lot more than I expected to.

A lot of people did. It's a surprisingly mature and well executed slab of metal, specially for a debut.

to Coke: That's what I thought as well.
I have to listen to in it's entirety, I have had it for a few months without ever really giving it a full listen.
Amnesia is so sick though. This Message Edited On 07.28.08

Great album for sure. Cynic will probably be better though.

Now there's a comparison i didn't think of at first...

It's possible but i'm not getting my hopes too high for it yet. A very strong year for metal regardless. Haven't listened to this album in two months I think I should put it on again.

last chorus in in the failing hour is epic win...i love every song on this album but i don't think it's a 5...to think this is just a debut and that this band could actually have room to mature and become...better...it's an awesometacular thought...

Felt/Feel the same way about Be'Lakor, only more so.

I interviewed the Keyboardist from Be'lakor recently, he says the new album should be out around April next year, they've pretty much finished writing the songs and are set for recording.

Yeah, dude, the keyboardist is mad in touch with the fanbase, he e-mailed me and asked what I would like to see in a band newsletter. I complimented their album and he said he read my e-mail to the band while they were in a lounge writing stuff!
I'm like, so cool.
Unfortunately we'll probably have to wait a lot longer than that for the next thing from these guys, which I'm pretty sure will be better in every way.

The drummer is really talented, fuck they all are. but the drumming should get a special mention here.

The Black Lodge has such a perfect intro. This is pretty good the first time through, and I plan on listening to it again sometime soon.

Ok, so I finally sat down last night and gave this a couple of listens. Very, very impressive, especially for a debut. However, the clean vocals are atrocious and the clean guitar passages are just screaming Opethian territory. Oh well, a few nit picks here and there. This still sounds like something that won't be leaving my ears for a good long while. Another good recommendation, props to Crimson!

Aww, I wouldn't call the clean vocals atrocious.
|
| |
I like the clean vocals. They're not the greatest ever, but they get the job done, and they're not used a lot.

The clean vocals are good enough and not used too much so i don't see the problem...big opeth fans usually don't like the cleans...thqat seems to be the trend with people i know but i don't really like akerfelt's cleans so i guess thats the split...

most Opeth fans i know including myself love his cleans. i dont know how anyone would dislike them. as for the cleans on this album they are good and add a nice touch to the album

Because they sound really flat. Who knows, they might grow on me but right now, I just think they are awful. Still trying to decide on a rating 4-4.5.
The instruments on this album are surprisingly fresh sounding. I honestly went into this album thinking they were a bunch of Opeth clones (had only listened to a few tracks from this). Quite a unique band.

On a technical level, yeah, they kind of suck. But he's trying, and I like the way they sound.
The soft passages sound pretty unique most of the time, particularly the one on By Others Considered. But sometimes I forget I'm not listening to Opeth, so yeah.
Overall this still kicks ass after 20 something listens.
