--I feel like if they got more play, more marketing, were pushed more they could have popped off. Like, nobody I know IRL can even name a song by these guys. It's sad. With more exposure I think they would have really captured the "goth" and adjacent demographic--
I agree with that, too. That's where being stuck on Century Media Records didn't do them any favors after Mandylion.

it's sad but at least we appreciate them

I'm really hoping 1) They stream or otherwise release the Mandylion reunion shows they're doing, 2) It convinces them to work together as a full band again.

I'm not a true fan. I fucked off when Anneke fucked off. Haven't really followed anything since then and don't know what's happening

That would be awesome.

They're doing a series of anniversary shows for Mandylion. They're playing the whole album and a collection of other Anneke-era songs. Features the entire Mandylion line-up. I would suggest checking out their latest release. I'd say it's about on par with this.

I never really connected with this album like the other ones. Or Mandylion. Or anything after Anneke. Planet, If Then Else, Home, Birds, and Sleepy are all I fuck with these days. Might check the latest one but I'm not excited. I hope the shows go smoothly and I wish them the best

I like Mandylion, Planet, If_Then_Else, and this one from Anneke. I also love Always... -- The others are good, but not essential to me. I like all three of the albums with their new singer.

I have been told to listen to the albums with the new singer but I just can't, it's not the same. And to be clear, this album is really good it just doesn't touch their best work for me. Some really good tracks though

The rest of the band is still the same, and they're still doing good things with their new singer. She just isn't Anneke.

it's not the same without Anneke ='(
I've been told to listen to Afterlights at the very least, might buckle and finally do that

I would suggest "Stronger" from their latest album.

Disclosure is on par with the Anneke stuff for me. Superb record. Do it art!!!!!

Disclosure is absolutely on par with (some of) the Anneke stuff. In fact with the exception of "The West Pole" their Mandy to Disclosure run is ridiculously consistent, especially considering how much ground they managed to cover
It's sad to read about their missed potential / label issues, do we think they are at least relatively more popular nowadays? I'm guessing some people may have discovered them via internet message boards and they are eternally grateful for the discovery (cannot think who I'm referring to here though!)

They are very popular in Latin America, so I don't know about their unpopularity actually... They may not be that well-known in the US, but they have been consistently popular elsewhere I think.
In NL Strange Machines even was a top 20 charting single!

It really is Latin American carrying that popularity. In NL it feels like they never got their breakthrough, even people who I know are into metal don't know what the Gathering are.
But Anneke seems to be doing well in her solo career, feels like she's been touring non-stop here.

Yeah Trif, outside Latin America I don't see them being that popular either.
It's hard to keep a stable fan base when the band keeps changing their sound in every album since their very beggining (even Mandylion and NB aren't necessarily similar). I believe it's also hard for labels to promote them, which probably explains why they founded their own one.
They have chosen creative freedom over a few bucks more in their pocket and that's why they're unique. Who gets rich with music nowdays anyway?

"In fact with the exception of "The West Pole"..."
You know, I think each song on that album has its own charm, not a single dud really. The only problem with TWP is the symbiosis between the band and Silje wasn't yet on point and that reflects on the whole thing.
