I kind of find comparing this and protection to mezzanine fruitless. With the first two they basically pioneered and then mastered the OG trip hop aesthetic and with mezz they entirely subverted the genre, transcended their own mastership, and carved a new path that would set the standard for the next decade and spin out into a lot of the greatest styles of electronic to date. It's an absolutely perfect run of albums.

this one has the vibes, protection has the atmosphere. i feel like if i could somehow remove the context of everything, i like protection a bit more. but everytime i listen to blue lines its like the most obvious missing link and its so fucking cool for it

Very fair point Pots. And super difficult to choose too. I'd say Blue Lines ultimately takes the cake still, although Protection has so many perfect tracks (t/t, Sly, Eurochild). Blue Lines is superbly put together flow-wise, whereas Protection has some small hickups in flow.
