I could never get into these guys although I reckon they're good at their craft... But this is honestly so good that I've been spinning it for a week. If we could rate decimals I'd give it a 4.7-4.8

This album has some of the coldest metal riffs!

Yeah man, the main riffs in Exhale and Visceral in particular are fucking frigid.

Normally I complain about loud masters but in their case they just make EiF and Shrines sound more suffocating and impenetrable.
The production here on the other hand is just fine for a DM album, skimming Trif’s ratings though it seems this type of mix just isn’t for him.

Yeah actually did one more discog spin yesterday and Shrines is definitely loudest, followed by EIF.
I think Vermis was the least loud, with this a close second. Destroyers was somewhere in the middle.
I totally get why the production is the way it is on Shrines and EiF, but I personally prefer how it is here (and on Vermis).

Exactly Itwas, this type of mix, especially the drums, is always a bit of a letdown to me.
The music on the other hand was surprisingly good! I think a 3.0 is perhaps a bit harsh, we'll see where the next few listening sessions bring me.

It’s interesting to me because JSM’s drum recordings are way more human sounding than most modern metal, since they’re not cut up into a million takes, they’re not edited in post, and you can hear the note to note fluctuations. Beyond that there’s nothing special about the way these drums are mic’d compared to most metal of the past 20-30 years. But I noticed you had highly rated a number of metal albums that had the drums placed less prominently in the mix or recorded with less close mic’d elements

Their production job has always down right pissed me off for that exact reason. Shrines was to the point of laughable because of the drum mix. It's sad because Jamie Saint Merat is obviously one of the most talented drummers to ever exist.

vinyl mix is fine so whatever drum mix nitpicks are referring to the cd mx
basically the ACTUAL mix is fine

Shrines digital version definitely has the worst drum mix of the bunch. LP version is better but doesn’t solve all of the issues. Pitfalls of DIY recording, sometimes you mess it up

It’s been a little while since I heard the vinyl mix but I remember thinking all of the clickiness wasn’t gone from the kick and toms

I genuinely believe I would enjoy this band a lot more if they just managed to solve those issues. It's very frustrating because EIF is the only album I have been able to get into, and even that was a challenge just because of the mix.

Yeah that clickiness, ugh. You seem to know a lot about this Itwas, how would you describe Heritage's sound? By Opeth of course... That one has always stood out to me as being incredibly tastefully done. Many jazz albums too, with a very clean and seemingly 'objective', natural sound to them, can't get enough of that. Ever.
I always feel like a whiner too when complaining about these things but they do affect the listening experience and thus end up in the ratings. Good to know that I'm not the only one Kusangii!
Will give this another go tomorrow!

I used to chalk up dm production as part of the record's character
even if I noticed the issues I'm too used to it to be bothered by it

heritage sounds incredible trif, it's not just you

I must have underdeveloped ears because I'm basically never bothered by production

That could be the difference yeah Wolfe, I tend to stay away from this sound when I encounter it. Won't get used to it that way...
Yessssss Shadowmire! It does!
