just shy of 2 hours. pretty stunning performance. band sounded great. "face of melinda" was my personal highlight. didn't expect that one.

mikael was in a fine mood joking around with the audience and responding to comments. he was genuinely funny and seemed to be enjoying himself. growls were a bit weak to start but got gradually better with each song. i don't think it's possible to fault this band instrumentally. when i saw their professionally recorded live performances on youtube i was sceptical as to how much doctoring is really going on, cause it just all sounds so perfect. well, i'm sure the vox are tweaked and stuff is being lightly smoothed over here and there, but the band really does sound amazing and they pull of every solo and every dynamic shift with such ease that it's just such a pleasure to watch.

it's funny how opeth crowds have changed over the years. it used to be metal dudes only and screams of "mikaaaaeeeeeeeel" and "demoooooon" between every song, which i guess made the guy a bit cranky here and there. now it's a relatively high percentage of females and you get hipsters with tote bags and really quite a lot of seniors, which is unsurprising. this resulted in not much movement, but still the crowd was really into it and loved the newer and softer material as well. the band was celebrated in the way they deserve, which was so good to see.

i just stood there with a huge grin on my face the whole time near the front and towards the end locked eyes with mikael. he gave me a big smile. bliss. dude's literally my hero.

I haven't seen them since Sounds of the Underground. It's not for lack of trying.
