@Brabiz, I guess because they were one of the main bands to pioneer the style? It's like saying Sabbath is the best metal band or that rock never surpassed The Rolling Stones, there are always going to be those purist that can't move past the origins of a thing or think that early = purity = quality. Would take Mgla or DsO or Blut Aus Nord or Mamaleek anyday. I don't think Daemon was bad though, I remember actually liking that record a decent bit.

Wait… yeah?

Yeah there are some good riffs, but I also think it’s not consistently engaging in that aspect. In general a handful of the songs feel fillery. There are standouts, but a lot of the second half loses me. I understand the impact of this album, but I think there are countless that are superior from this movement. One of the last albums I’d choose to listen to for this kinda thing. I used to love it way more, but over the years it’s lost a lot of it’s excitement.

And I don’t feel this way about a majority of their peers. Out of the bunch this isn’t as adventurous or memorable as a whole, though there are definitely big standouts on the album

That's fair. I feel like the insane real life lore surrounding it and just how influential it was at the time of its release are a huge part of this album's staying power. I'd say other classic bands like Darkthrone and Immortal kinda whoop Mayhem's ass a bit.

Yeah that’s what I’m saying, the appeal of this album is mostly due to the insanity surrounding it.

But I do like mayhem quite a bit, just not this album. Or the most recent one. I think Chimera is a brilliant album personally

I don't know man. I feel like this album riffs harder than their peers during the time. And the riffs still hold up regardless of time period imo

Drumming here is also head and shoulders above their peers as well

"Let it be known that this is probably not as enjoyable as a lot of people think."

I will never ever get this mindset.

I agree that ihsahn is probably the most talented guitarist/songwriter of that scene, but they were pretty different from what mayhem was doing. I don't see ITNSE or anthems as a "riffy" album. More atmospheric/symphonic. I just appreciate this album for being a riff machine all the way through. I don't feel like there are any weak songs. Weakest is probably title track if I had to choose

I really like later mayhem and ordo ad chao might even be my favorite. Had an album like that come out in 1994 it would've been groundbreaking for the time

yeah this is one of those cases where the “classic” album, while still good, isn’t quite as good as where they would eventually take their sound.

but then again who doesn’t love a good FUNERAL
