I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't dig TIA either. This and The Portal Tapes are the only ones I like from this band tbh.

Having just experienced both albums for my first time ever, I gotta say that I prefer TIA. Focus is much more impressive from a compositional and technical perspective, especially given when it was released, but I enjoy the music of TIA more.

That's pretty much how I feel about them too. Definitely check out the Portal Taoes too!

Will check out The Portal Tapes after Carbon Based Anatomy. The good parts of CBA are fucking great but this EP is largely failing to hold my attention.

It's definitely not as jawdropping in the songwriting and playing departments, but it's sweet and mellow.

Each song had little moments where I would think "Wow. That's gorgeous! But how did I get here?" because I found my thoughts wandering elsewhere. I forgot about Portal Tapes between now and my last comment and am jamming Kindly Bent instead lol

I'm almost halfway through, I can't stop now! I actually like a few tracks here and there but it's largely bland.

Haha! Well it's just inoffensive background noise. Not bad enough to turn you off Cynic, but not good enough that you'll notice when it ends and you end up just walking around with your headphones on and no music playing for about 10 minutes before you suddenly realise it and feel like a fool but are thankful that no one else knows what just happened.

The title track, Moon Heart Sun Head and Holy Fallout were actually pretty tasty jams that would have been nice mellow pieces on a better album.

It generally wouldn't be a terrible album from a lesser band, but it just doesn't have enough interesting ideas for a Cynic album.

I don't think it has enough interesting content to justify it's existence no matter what band put it out, but it's certainly not terrible. 2.5-3ish

Disagreed hard. It would be awful either way.

2.5-3 is not bad according to Sput, right? And in any case, I always consider a 3 to be "you're not missing anything by not listening to it, but you might like it." The instrumental work on the album is still good. It's just not god-tier like most other Cynic albums, but for a garden variety prog rock band, it'd be pretty okay.

2.5-3 is my idea of average. It can have moments but it's largely just inoffensive music. Neither good, nor particularly bad. If another band released that album, it would still be the exact same inoffensive and unspectacular prog rock.
