"does metal attract the type, or create it?"
Metalheads on the internet often seem to be the type of people who identify with the genre mostly because of its otherness in comparison to other genres and the corresponding associations other people have with it - listening to something that other people find strange/aggressive and saying they enjoy it while other people just find it odd/dissuasive makes them feel special and puts them in the place of "you don't understand it but I do --> sooo ---> I must be something better since I understand it and you don't".
Most of the time they are dumb though, because there's a downside to this: The exact same metalheads identify over the sound of the genre and the things that are distinct to the genre, so they often draw the line between "good music" and "not good music" between where something sounds metal and make it a thing about the image of the music (something music should never be). Sooo in consequence of that, they tend to hear something that has electric guitars and growls and stuff and go something like "oh, sounds like metal so it's good", even if they don't realize it.
I gotta be honest though, there's a reason why I started with "metalheads on the internet" because I'm friends with a few metalheads and they're not like that at all and actually are among the most frienly people I know. (prog metal fans btw, just so you know)

@SpaceMan
I took your comment too seriously but my response was directed at the idea drugs could automatically make something awesome, rather than meaning for it to come across as attacking the 'perpetrator'
Perhaps a little frustration in there born out of my own experiences.

Yeah, it's probably an interplay of "this sounds so special and I want to be special so I listen to it to identify myself with it" and then "men I listen to so much special music, isn't it great how special I am - and you aren't!".
So yeah, a lot of idiots right there.
Metal music rules though. m/ One of the best genres ever, just to clarify. Just for other reasons.

@Rik
I can't believe you gave such a detailed response to what's essentially a troll comment. Also, there are some humongous generalisations in there (which I'm assuming you are aware of given the last bit).

I honestly think the drugs change the composition of the music, not my perception of it. its baffling, I don't see any reason to listen to music sober when drugs make every band progressive

@Demon: Of course I am aware of them. Not only because of the last bit but also because I used "often" in the beginning of the comment, so that means it happens often but it isn't the rule. (Also, it being a troll comment doesn't mean there aren't things worth a mention about that topic)

There does appear to be a particular sub-genre of metalheads who think anything that isn't metal sucks, as someone who's migrated over fairly recently that's something I can never understand.

Roach, I like your posts generally but I think you're way off-base. What you're describing either sounds like total projection, or you're talking about 12 year old metalheads. And since you seem to be describing metalheads on the internet, that's primarily what they are. Past the age of 12, nobody listens to music because it's 'cool'. That's absolutely fucking ridiculous. Metal does attract a lot of weird and socially awkward people because it provides a singular outlet for dark emotions that are not socially acceptable to express in any other forum. But I don't see that as a bad thing, even if a lot of us are just sad lost awkward fucks, capable of growing a neckbeard or not.
And yeah... Jimson Weed is strong stuff. Don't do it kids unless you want to wake up 3 days later babbling and sweating in the ER in a straight-jacket.

Never said they aren't. But...
"Past the age of 12, nobody listeners to music because it's 'cool'. That's absolutely fucking ridiculous. "
I think you underestimate how "fucking ridiculous" a lot of people are, haha.
Agreed about the rest though. It's obvious that I work with generalizations here and since I'm a fan of metal music myself (I refuse calling myself a "metalhead" though), I can admit that that is obviously a reason why to listen to it. I'm talking about a kind of fan that we can probably all agree exists. Not metalheads in general, of course. In that case I'd bite the hand that feeds me.

You just have to listen to a lot of Tool and you automatically become a self-aware metalhead and also super intelligent. Except you don't get it then you're dumb.

'I think you underestimate how "fucking ridiculous" a lot of people are'
It must happen, image is far too important for some & that can manifest itself in different ways including music 'taste'.
