So this album has crept into my top 10 of all time, but...
I gotta ask: Does anyone just despise that part in Painted Grey early on when its just the guitars playing the three part harmony? I mean...the first time I heard it I couldn't believe it. Like it just sounds awful. I thought it was a joke and that this band was actually awful and all the hype was just a huge troll job. Luckily the rest of the track is magnificent and totally redeems itself.
Also seven's avatar got me good.

Man its a mess and so long. I can't fathom hearing that and loving it, but it doesn't really matter. I'd 5 this shit harder if I could.

That part with the 3 guitars sounds more jarring than it needs to be due to the mixing and EQ for sure. The timing is also pretty sloppy, especially when that 3rd guitar comes in. If this was on Ashes I think it would've sounded much more palatable, but it's part of the charm on Marrow. I dig their decision for the sound of this album.

"as if the entirety of Pale Folklore isn't sloppy af"
Can't argue that, especially John's drumming

Sure, but assuming he has never focused on being a drummer I feel he's doing some pretty neat hand foot patterns here and there plus some commendable double bass parts with def an effort on some of the ride parts. His performance is improved on The Mantle, plus all the percussions/timpani etc. are well done.
But yeah his drums doesn't bring the music to a whole new level, thankfully guitars/vox/songwriting are out of this world on both albums.

He's 1000 times better at drumming than I am, but yeah the Mantle is noticeably improved drumwise. I don't mind his drumming on Pale Folklore, but I wouldn't call it tight. Doesn't need to be to be a classic m/

I have basically have 4 months with 1.5hrs per week of drumming experience so I am easily impressed when non drummer can lay down some beats. Imagine if they had someone like Marko from Moonsorrow, it would've been insane

Folk metal pantheon of oak*
Jamming Suden Uni right now and I agree. Marko is also one of my fav metal drummers, his sound is so massive and creative. Not one fill/beats are out of place, his intensity is always in accord with the music

It is kind of impressive that their sloppiness and somewhat primitive melodies seem to add to the atmosphere.
