Eh you can't please everyone.

If they only played deep cuts there would be an equally large group of pissed off people.

But those people would be wrong, that's the difference.

Agreed again. But, there are always people that can be wrong. So, who are they? The ones or the others. That's a good question. Probably none are wrong and nobody is right. Probabbly, this is very simple. This is only a matter of personal taste. Willn't be?

Bands with bigger fanbases than them play different setlists all the time. They play the same stuff every time and swap out a couple songs but even the ones they swap with are mostly shit they play all the time too. It's just straight up lazy. The only song I'd say they "have" to play every time is ghost of perdition. People aren't gonna go home screaming if they don't hear demon of the fall. And even then, they could play demon of the fall and ghost of perdition and handpick everything else.

If anyone complained, it'd just be a couple neckbeards

I also believe opeth has a fanbase that appreciates the deep cuts. Prog fans are nerds. They love that shit

@Eak: As far as prog metal goes, Dream Theater is actually a really good comparison point here -- especially now that Portnoy is back in the band. The sets became a bit more homogenized during the Mangini era, but back when Portnoy was in charge of the setlists, they would change songs almost every night. Obviously they still had the heavy-hitters like Pull Me Under and Metropolis in frequent rotation, but otherwise, the sets were quite unpredictable. I really wish Opeth could take a page from that book when it comes to their live shows; I love Demon of the Fall as much as the next guy, but it would be nice to see the rest of MAYH get more attention. Maybe throw in When or The Amen Corner to spice things up

It comes down to Opeth being prog so getting the songs perfect live is harder, and Mike just seems to have a disdain for his older music. He's content to just play the same hits every night to indulge the fans, but if it was viable, he'd just play songs off the last 3 albums.

Almost nobody wants that though
