See, I never skip songs when I'm listening to full albums. I just don't like the idea of it. Except maybe "War Pigs" from The Real Thing. The album is so much better without it.

Great Gig In The Sky is a total jam

I'm quite different in that regard. If something feels like filler or too weak, I skip it. I value consistency a lot (or try to, at least).

Us and Them pwns
|

Having said that, what makes this album rule is that the songs flow superbly well from one to the other.

@danny: Yeah, but good flow is more important than consistency. Plus songs I'll be all "meh" about will grow on me if I don't skip them.
It happens all of the time.

Well at least now I know why you have so many 5's.
Whatever floats your boat dude.
"Money" might prob be in my Top 5 Floyd songs.
I might bend my 1 5 rule for Floyd tbh, but would limit it to two of their albums.
|
| |
Also I consider flow and consistency to go hand in hand. Good song/bad song/good song/good song/filler/good song patterns don't seem to me to have much flow potential.
But again, everyone is free to listen at their own discretion.

""Money" might prob be in my Top 5 Floyd songs."
That song sticks out like a sore thumb on Dark Side in a bad way. It'd fit so much better on WYWH it's not even funny. Definitely not one of my favorites.
Some filler is great by the way. Plus some songs I hate at first have later become favorites so why take the chance by ignoring them? It's better to look for the good stuff in music. There's a ton of exceptions to this, but hey.
I may have bitched a lot about the Tool filler, but if I listen to Aenima, you'll be sure I'm hearing it all, Ions, Cesero and all.

Wtf??!!!
With regards to filler, I think it can be useful in some instances, but some albums (Pearl Jam's Vitalogy for instance) are imo ruined by it. Quite a few people disagree with me on that though, it happens on the PJ threads.
Judas Priest's Point of Entry is pretty much ruined because about half the songs on it are weak/skippable imo.

Well I can agree on that. Then again Pearl Jam is bleh anyway.
"Money" is a decent song, don't get me wrong, but one of Floyd's best? Nah, probably my least favorite on Dark Side of the Moon. It's not even that unique for them.
|
| |
Who cares, the bass alone is good enough
|
| |
@Ars: I was simply using it as an example, although I know how you feel about PJ. It's actually my least fave by them.
I could mention other examples, but I wouldn't want to get people butthurt.

Nah, back when I was giving them a chance (I had their first 3 albums) It was least favorite of the three. Ten and Vs. were nearly tied and Vitalogy was in a distant 3rd place.
I keep saying this, but there isn't a single bad song on Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, or Animals, not even close, even if there's a handful or less of average ones. Also with the except of "Where You're In", same goes for Obscured by Clouds.
^This is why I have them all as 5's.

Dark Side is perf, Animals is more perf, and WYWH is even more perf.

If I were to rank this, it'd go:
Money
Time
Us and Them
Speak to Me/Breathe & Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse (close call)
The Great Gig in the Sky
On the Run (least strong, but fulfills its purpose imo)
I play guitar, and Money always seemed great for guitar. I learned it more or less (by tab), although I prob wouldn't be able to play the solo by memory.
