I prefer the songs with more sustained intensity, but The Czar is great in context of the album.

Its a shame they slid so far downhill after this. One of those albums that so good it crushed the band that created it I suppose.

I saw somewhere that they wanted to simplify things in order to get a live performance that sounds like the album. That's where Hunter and OMATS happened. With EoS they wanted to go back to loading the album with stuff like in this one.

Blood Mountain was the pinnacle, this marked the start of the decline

Yeah Doof, trying to get the albums to sound like they sound live was not a good idea.

budgie, that reverses the cause and effect. they can play more complex stuff live and make it sound fine at 90%, but they shouldn't intentionally, uh...streamline it on record with the idea of live constraints in mind. then you're putting a glass ceiling on the album.

Yeah Remission is a pretty straight forward record, so live, they work wonders. Maybe it wasn't until CTS that they realized they put so much stuff on the record knowing they couldn't reproduce it on stage. Just my own ramblings idk.

yeah, while it can be fun to hear the songs exactly how they were, it's not always meant to be. i know michael gira of swans has said that the album and live performance should be different because you can do studio tricks and additional things you can't live, but that it can also be very boring to just be rehearsing your songs instead of "playing" them
