"There was more to Deftones and there was definitely a wider appreciation for them but on the whole people didn’t really give a fuck."
This is interesting and makes a certain amount of sense - can't imagine the two albums after this did much to change that? I remember when DE came out it got a heavy push from Kerrang (which explains a lot about that entire generation of mallcore-brained Deftones fans ig), but had the sense they were halfway between the mainstream and a those-who-know deal beforehand

I saw them at Brixton on that Diamond Eyes tour.
They were outstanding. Opened with Rocket Skates and it remains one of the best openers I’ve ever seen.

Yea that’s exactly it.
Deftones in the states had the biggest impact. They were the skaters’ band and people definitely lumped them in with Incubus and Linkin Park around this time

That was SNW. They started the downward spiral from S/T, but during WP they were still doing pretty good.

on WP they were just rolling on coke and booze, things got pretty dark S/T SNW days

I thought coke makes you lose weight

I'm not a huge fan of AtF (BQaD is still great) and I think I know why. White Pony was the album where Chino really found his voice. He was whispering a lot through AtF and found confidence in his crooning ability on WP. Not to mention the addition of Frank, which evolved their sound altogether.

Some absolutely huge songs on here! (Digital Bath, RX Queen & Passenger to name a few)
Just not so crazy on this as an overall package. I come bouncing back to it every year or so and always feel a bit 'luke-warm' by the end of it. Can't put my finger on it, as I know there's a lot of great stuff on here.
