Yeah, the stretch is on "adequate". I get that it isn't an object, but that doesn't make it worth less. There are a lot of bands where the vocalist's musical talent is much more required than, say, the drummer's. Saying Maynard isn't a real musician because he's only a vocalist is like ... I'm really looking for a fitting comparison, but don't find one because it's just absurd.
You know, it would imply that an a-capella band aren't musicians and that their voices can't be considered as "instruments", and the former is offensive and regarding the latter, I think they can

It's complicated just in the sense that people have different detailed ways of thinking about it. I think the discussion about it in this thread is evidence of that. But yes singers are musicians.

I think what I meant to say was that a voice is not an instrument in a physical sense, but it is used as an instrument, both by the composer and by the vocalist himself, thus making it pointless to differentiate between vocals and instruments in the ways of handling them in theory. I hope that makes sense.

I think I pretty much agree here. A musician is someone who makes music and vocalist definitely do this along with the rest of the band. However, that doesn't mean I'd necessarily consider vocals an instrument (even though I agree wit hyou that they can be used like one).

I love Maynard's choice of being a little bit in the backlights, the whole Tool presence on stage becomes really powerful. The two times I saw them they were brilliant.
