I'm talking about Counterfeit's post. He's complaining about vocals. Why do people give this 1-2.5 and go "LOLOLOL VOCALIST". He's supposed to sound like a 15 year old sissy. I just don't get it.

Screamo is not defined by bad singing, I'm so tired of this argument.

Oh, he's supposed to sound like that? Well then, I guess I just don't get it.

For the most part I'd say there is more shouting on here than anything else.

I like their singing voices a lot.

Screamo is characterized by whiny vocalists... I'm so tired of this argument.

It's not bad singing at all, it IS a certain style though that strives for grossly exaggerated emotions and an over-the-top kinda attitude that often ignores the tenets of what's considered good singing in other genres. To be honest the screaming here isn't what stands out to me the most, like it's not that big of a deal either way.

You can sound emotional and whatnot and still not be obnoxious, there is indeed a middle ground and tons of screamo vocalists have occupied it for years.

"Screamo is characterized by whiny vocalists..."
That's probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard ever.
"that strives for grossly exaggerated emotions and an over-the-top kinda attitude that often ignores the tenets of what's considered good singing in other genres."
Again, you can express this in ways that aren't completely contrived or obnoxious.
"like it's not that big of a deal either way."
Well since they shout/scream a lot it's extremely noticeable.

agreed. and trust me there is bad emo vocals. I just don't think they're on this record. Kathy's vocals have become a tad grating over time, but I've never really listened to this for the vocals that much anyway, per se.

You can make an ambient album without having it be 80 minutes of the same sound, but does that mean that the 80 minute album inherently sucks?

I'm not comparing the music I'm comparing the principle so inb4 LOLOL THIS ISN'T AMBIENT.

This album fucking sucks... I've just been laboring under the delusion that it's actually good. Listen up, people: this album is total shit; the screaming is bad, the music is like WTF IS GOING ON and the lyrics just make me more upset than anything else in life possibly could. We're all in on it, every one of us who claims that this is album is good, we're just pretending it is.

I'm sorry, maybe you misinterpreted me, but what's so contrived about that?

I'm fine with Kathy's vocals but this to me is worse than Loma Prieta's early vocals.
"You can make an ambient album without having it be 80 minutes of the same sound, but does that mean that the 80 minute album inherently sucks?"
What I'm saying though is that the way they perform the genre is inherently bad I'm not saying that there's a problem with the principle of exaggeration itself. You can exaggerate certain aspects of a sound and not be annoying as fuck.

to be honest I'm well-aware this isn't technically or objectively the most awesome album out there, for sure. It has tons of flaws, but it also has a bunch of aspects that are really fucking awesome.

If I was to listen to this now, with more music under my belt... I'd probably put it somewhere around a 3.5 probably. But since it was one of the first albums I ever obsessed over, and along with Saetia opened the door for me into everything emo/screamo/hardcore I truly owe it that extra 1. no regrets.

"this is by no means the archetypal emo album"
The only reason people are resorting to this thread is because of MJ's tyrade against it. Whether you like it or not, it brought a lot of people into listening to it and rating it lower so it's become a discussion place for why.
"I'm sorry, maybe you misinterpreted me, but what's so contrived about that?"
I'm saying CTTS's approach is contrived.
