Giving this one another spin ahead of their new LP.

Ugh... starts off so well, but the middle tracks are not good. The chorus riff in Monstrocity is uninspired, as is the whole of Ivory Tower. I feel like this is picking up again at Nostrum, really.

Kinda agree with you pourr this is prob their worst album other than cc. With all the talk on the new album being diverse and each track standing out in it's own way just makes me even more eh on this one. It's good overall. But I swear every song here just kinda sounds the same. Theres like 5 mid tempo tracks in a row. The whole record just sounds like one big mid tempo riff lol.

I don't know. I don't think that just because they're mid paced that they all sound the same. I feel like they all have pretty distinct ideas going on

"Nostrum is probably second best here"

It is, only outshined by the all mighty Clockworks

Good picks, Ivory Tower and Nostrum for sure for me. And By The Ton.

If you play any instrument, look at this: https://tab.tuneguitar.net/meshuggah/ivory-tower

It's just descending chromatic galore, it really does my head in!

Bit harsh to criticise a melody in a Meshuggah song, but that's why I call it a lazy, uninspired riff.

I think the chromatic patterns combined with the syncopation are creative, but wtf do I know I'm probably just easily entertained by shuggs and chuggs

I don't care if it's difficult or not. As long as the general effect pleases me, and boy does it do that~~~!!!

Stifled needs more love here - I think either that or By the Ton are my #2 (Clockworks is obviously 1)

Stifled is the bees knees, the cats pajamas, the...dolphin's...flipper?

YES. Strange comparisons, but entirely true. Stifled/Ivory Tower/By The Ton is my top 3, forever changing positions.
