re: immolation, Rel has it exactly right. I get why people would want to keep holding a classic band above a newer band but this is at worst equal to CTAWB. personally I rate this higher because it’s much, much more complex and challenging while still being savage and atmospheric, but I understand why many or most would disagree. then they’ve got 3 more albums (shrines, stare, destroyers) that are better than all of immolation’s other stuff, and then 2 more very good albums. these guys have put out a legendary run of albums at this point in much less time

is that a serious theory out of curiosity? stylistically superficially similar on recent era deathspell but I recall the blasts and fills sounding noticeably different technically on paracletus or synarchy for example

ive seen a small handful of people post about it online over the years so idk how to classify it as a serious theory



hes mentioned he likes their stuff in like every "what u diggin" interview hes had, he once said something that alluded to it, saying he "whored himself out to extreme metal musicians in france"



plus, from a skill standpoint he really is one of the best active drummers in the world, and those deathspell parts r crazy. rumors they use drum machines but seems more human drumming in multiple takes, and jamie is skilled enough to change up his style for other non-ulcerate music. Its also possible they started using Jamie later, where you mention recent stuff sounds more similar.
