Mikael overdoes it at times ye, PC it at its strongest when Mikael takes a back seat and lets the instrumentation come forward.
The musicianship is impeccable.

Ever since they dropped the heavy sections it just hasn't been the same. What made this band so special and incredible was the shifts between the death metal and melodic prog sections all over the course of a single epic track. Not sure if I even want to check out the new record. They can still play the hell out of their instruments, and Mikael is a great vocalist, but without that aspect its just another prog record.

Dude, there are 'heavy' moments that transition into more melodic passages on the new record, its just mainly heavy atmosphere instead of riffs and vocals.
