there was one article where he said he didn't like his guitar part for Hearts/Wires at first, which histrionic fans took to mean that he hates the new album and is thinking of leaving the band. he then clarified what he said in a follow-up article but people will remember events their own way I guess... Stephen won't ever be fully happy with his role on a Deftones album because he's always on a leash. That's kind of been the nature of his collaboration with Chino since at least White Pony and Gore is no different.

Yeah if either weren't in the band that'd be the end of the bands entire sound and vibe. I don't like their recent production, though. Ever since Saturday Night Wrist, their production seems more polished and slick.

lmao bloc
He's good for providing some heaviness but I'm definitely happy with Chino running things and keeping the post-rock/dream pop moments as the focus. Stephen should make a side project to get out his heavy riffs and nu-metal ideas.

I haven't loved their production since Diamond Eyes. I miss the rumbling abrasive guitar tone on S/T.
I'd have to agree the band is in the best hands with Chino at the wheel, but I do wish he would let Stephen have more freedom sometimes. Rats Rats Rats is a rare example of just that, and it's one of my faves.

I love Koi No Yokan's production. It's probably their second best production job behind SNW. As for this and Diamond Eyes, compression often gets in the way of the dynamics of the music, so I would be inclined to agree with you. I don't think it's the polish that's really the problem, though...

Agreed Ocean, though I prefer DE production to this.

Oh yeah, agreed totally. This has easily the worst production of any of their albums.

"tbh this would probably be one of my favourite Deftones albums if it had better production. Some truly beautiful textures on this album."
"Yeah this might be my 2nd or 3rd favorite if the production and mixing were better."
I'm totally with both of you, and what's really baffling is that this album was delayed for months to get a better mix - what the hell did the earlier one sound like for this to be deemed the "better of the two" ?

tbh it's not really a technically bad mix or anything so much as it doesn't work to the songs' best interests like the last 2 albums did
DE and Koi are two of the best-produced rock albums I've heard this decade

This album is such a grower. Didn't like it at first but damn. Phantom Bride is incredible.

I love this album to bits.
2 houses next to each other in my neighbourhood were hosting parties today. 1 was blaring Dolly Parton the other was blasting Saturday Night Wrist. Walking by was kinda surreal.

The S/T is prob my least fave album production wise aside from this

I've never had a problem with production on any of their albums besides this one.

I love the prod on s/t
visceral is a great word for it, the most visceral moments from ATF met the dreamiest parts of White Pony and made a beautiful but very angry baby

I didn't like the S/T until today but damn is it dope and the production fits it perfectly imo.

I can see why the production of Gore bothers people, but I honestly don't mind it. It tends to fit in with the vibe of most songs pretty decently imo.

My biggest problem with the production is how they did Chino's vocals, especially when he screams they seem to add this weird effect that really muffles his voice and it's a lot less pleasant than his screams on the s/t for example where they are just visceral.
