Well, that is the worst section of lyrics within the worst song on that album.
Whereas 'I won't let the psychos around' is in the middle of supposedly the best song here.
I'll always prefer the lyrics on songs like 'Slipped' and 'Demons' or 'The Last Time' or goddam 'Lemonworld' or 'Sorrow' to "I'm out looking for astronauts" or "that man's a balloon".
The first are 100% consistently excellent, scan perfect, capture what Matt is trying to communicate perfectly - the latter just stick out as real clunky for me. If you like 'em you like 'em, go for it.
I generally like the lyrics here but I much prefer where Matt went later.

'Alligator was a huge breakthrough for them critically and commercially'
It broke them to a higher level but 'Boxer' smashed through the ceiling. They were about as big as The Walkmen after 'Alligator'.
After 'Boxer' they were about as big as 'Arcade Fire'
