Re: WP being “revolutionary” I actually don’t believe that’s what makes it special. I just think coincidentally you had a group of guys having fun making music and experimenting at the right time and with the right audience. Lightning in a bottle sort of thing. That’s also why I think it’s silly for either the band or the fans to continue chasing the dragon in that sense. That timing for this band and audience probably won’t occur again.

So revolutionary isn’t the right word as it wasn’t, imo, doing anything all that new. It just did the right thing at the right time. Like a happy accident

Stephen’s meshuggah fandom also diminishes Deftones’ strengths imo. 9 string is basically a meme even chino was chirping it. All of his best riffs are written on 6 and 7 strings when he had more sense of adventure. I sound like a complete dick but it’s just my opinion and I’m happy he’s happy doing it. Love the guy and hung out with him after a show in Seattle once. Super chill and super cool.

The song Pompeji is cringy even for early 00s standards.

I feel Koi no Yokan was a much better album overall, it had decent songwriting compared to this aimless technical mess.

I think they're literally the greatest band in the world post-2000 but c'mon this is mid-tier deftones.

I don't think this album will win over any Deftones skeptics, but it's almost like if Deftones fans were part of a group think of what they'd like for them to release. I think it works.

"Stephen uses a 9 STRING GUITAR? HOLY SHIT I MUST LISTEN TO THE ALBUM RIGHT NOW."

As others have mentioned it's not like he goes crazy with it. However, saying he could've done all of this on a 7-string is somewhat wrong. There's no way he gets those lower end tones on TSOM and Headless on a 7. Probably not even on an 8; Hence why he uses a 9-string on those tracks.

String count notwithstanding, I think his riffs are pretty damn inspired on this album. The last forty second of 'This Link is Dead' are pretty damn cool.

@Pots: Jazz and metal are two of the best genres for drumming if you ask me. Jazz and jazz fusion are probably the peak of drumming, but there's stellar drumming in all genres. Even Abe has a pretty unique, hip hop and hardcore influenced pocket that he occupies for most every song. Sometimes technical wizardry isn't the point and the performance is much more about character. I think a blend of the two make for the best drummers.

I say that as someone that loves shit like Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Mark Guiliana, Zach Hill (not that he's jazz), Max Roach, etc. Discriminating against genres just narrows your view. Also you should listen to Alphaville by Imperial Triumphant if you want metal drumming to care about. Perfect blend of jazz and metal on the kit.

Side note: Danny Carey is great, but overrated as fuck.

Yeah Chino is tight! ... facebook likes this album a lot less than sputnik. a lot of people complaining about how chino has always been the weakest link of the band and then just as many people have been talking about how the drums on Ohms A. sound like crap and B. hardly even do anything, which I think is crazy dumb of them but whatever potsy will yell at me if i go on about people be wrong with opinions. :-/

Older fans will still expect angry Chino, when he's almost 50 years old. The older you get the more difficult is to get angry about sth.
