Yea 13th Step is a beautiful atmospheric record. I'd hardly call it alt metal. I wouldn't even know what to call it actually.

I know 'art-rock' is kind of a pretentious/vague term but I think it actually kind of applies to this album. I also hear a lot of post-rock on there.

shoegaze is a pretty nebulous term but you could apply it here to some extent

There's elements of shoegaze and art rock on here, but most of the songs still get pretty heavy to where I'd just call the album alternative metal, like all their others.

Maybe it's because in wikipedia in the alternative metal article they listed APC as a band that it belongs to that genre.

It's probably one of their weaker albums overall but those last 3 songs are all gold. Reminds me a bit of the last 3 on White Pony, though obviously not quite as amazING

i'd love a live version of this record, just to hear the songs without that infamous Gore production getting in the way

The fact that Chino plays the Jerry Cantrell Phantom Bride guitar solo pretty decently live is awesome. If Chino has the chops, hopefully we'll see some more Deftones guitar solos from Chino going forward as Stephen doesn't really give a shit anymore

I really don't like the combination of Deftones and guitar solos at all

YAY now I'll have 2 problems to play the guitar with deftones songs: I need a 7 string guitar and I need to learn guitar solos...I think I'll stay playing chevelle.

does Stephen even use the upper strings on that thing? seems like Chino pretty much handles all the "shimmering" guitar stuff these days, but I could be wrong
