The dude was secretly love with the lady (both were in relationships with other people) and essentially reformed the band under false pretenses, secretly hoping it would win her over. The ENTIRE record is about how in obsessed he is with her, coded into the lyrics and, as Colton said, one of them is an anagram for "Valerie, love of my life." So all the while she is performing these songs not knowing their darker motive.
