back in the day this was known as studio hack music. nothing too special about it. nothing sexy, exciting, special, or daring. not much emotion or anything artistic or thought provoking. fairly generic AOR for its times. i tend to agree. it "sounds" great, but so what?

really. how could anyone tolerate this drivel after paying to hear it? ugh. as faceless a band as their ever was. no soul, no character, generic as it comes.

they put out three albums in ten years and two of 'em sucked. and the first has not held up well and is generic studio rock in the worst way. really. i understand it was all Tom Shultz and he has some talent. but come now...

"This album blows harder then a mighty hurricaine wind. Full of overblown synthsizer work, boring guitar drivel, Queen inspired faux chior vocals, and silly pretentious pap such as the overwrought "Superstars", dumb cautionary tale "Miss America", the preachy "Fooling Yourself", corny "Man In The Wilderness", and of course the bloated, grandiose title cut, this kind of crap is like the heavy straw that would break the back of rock n roll. 100% awful."

Looks like he does.

how can someone listen to this and say they have no passion or emotion. The guitars literally ONLY rely on emotive playing for the most part. For sure trollin, though.

If anything they sounded too much like the record live . That YouTube video is poorly balanced and doesn't really represent the band live. They might not have been the best live band, but they were far from the worst.

"forum users are weird people"

I stopped caring about other people's opinions years ago, especially when it comes to music. If an album sounds good to me, it is good, end of story.

Lol! If you want sexy, exciting and daring, go watch someone bungie jumping nude. If you want great rock/pop songwriting, listen to this album.

Yeah, not only critically, but financially as well. At the time of its release, it quickly became the most profitable rock album until it was surpassed by "appetite for destruction".

ok you bunch of bozo's have convinced me. i have changed my rating. it is a good album and yes...for a debut album quite remarkable. and i can't blame the band for giving rise to the the worse kind of corporate rock imaginable. i will blame the record companies for that

some good songs here with good energy, melodies, and spirit i enjoy. Tom is to be respected. remarkable what he did from his home and basement

overall i still find it somewhat thin after repeated listening. but i cannot deny Foreplay into A Long Time...Rock n Roll Band and Smokin.' these are good songs and recordings

the band did kinda blow live. but given the times and sound of the record it was a challenge to reproduce on stage, definitely. and this at a time when fans thought sounding like the record was great! but as we know now sounding like the record is shit. you gotta sound live. like The Who and others that came before

good recording, guys. however what came after from the band not so much imho. i am out

oh, but styx still sucks =]

If the rest of the guys are a bunch of bozo's, imagine what a bozo you must be for letting them influence you to the point of changing your rating. You don't have to like an album just because of the appeal.
