whatever we think of the album (opinion still pending, lukewarm / unsure despite some positives, currently) ... I'm seeing a rather hefty number of old users flock in, plus a few accounts that either haven't commented, or have barely commented before
nice to see considering the inability to actually create new accounts

yeah
I want to know what deththrasher thinks of the growls... I thought that Opeth was metal, I guess I was... right?

I enjoy listening to this thing front to back, but I agree with whoever said there are zero hooks. I'm fine with things being less straightforward, but I really do have a hard time remembering which song I'm listening to because they are all playing in a similar sonic pallet, except the closer. It's probably going to end up at 4 for me.
Oh and this is immaculately produced. I can pinpoint each instrument, and there's some fun imaging stuff happening here, with some left/right panning.

"haha didn’t you say it sucked originally? that’s cool it grew"
yeah and then i revised that opinion like two days later when i listened to it a second time. first time jamming was in the middle of the night with my headphones (not with my vastly superior new hi-fi system) and i was in some kind of emotional pit that night where i wasn't able to feel anything. took me a few days to recover from that, kinda scary. guess thats manic depression for ya.

“Damnation
Still Life
My Arms, Your Hearse
Blackwater Park
Ghost Reveries
These are the 5 however you want to shake out the order”
Wrong. Ghost Reveries and Watershed are best

Waltteri Väyrynen really ties this together, Axe was proficient but like Lopez Väyrynen really adds an extra dimension the Axenrot albums lacked imo

He was in Bloodbath and Paradise Lost and joined Opeth in '22 apparently.
Not that I knew either, I was just blown away by the drumming and was gonna glaze Axenrot but no its a new guy. Makes sense tho, I always thought Axenrot sounded like a robot

Axenrot was badass. If anything, to me, it sounds like the new drummer is trying to sound like axenrot. Stylistically, the drumming here isn't a far cry at all from the last few albums except that this dude may actually have more chops than axe and axe has some serious motherfuckin chops

I mean I did mistake him for Axenrot at first, but there's a mix of groove and subtlety that I don't think Axe ever carried, at least to this extent. Again, he reminds me a lot of Lopez. I think Mikael's writing will always demand a certain style of drumming, superficially what Lopez, Axe, and Väyrynen do is pretty similar, but there's a creativity to Väyrynen that feels ascendant in much the way early Opeth did

Also fuck it I think I'm raising this to a 4, not even for the growls, there's so much silly dinky twinkly shit and it just puts a smile on my face. idk why they ever released a radio edit of S1 tho, the full version is much much better

Sometimes I’ll just be sitting somewhere minding my own business and out of nowhere that flute guitar interplay interlude will just come bursting into my brain.
