Who could have guessed that zakalwe, a transphobe, would also be a racist. Shocked.

Man I don’t know how you can hear the end of baby’s in a thundercloud and still not like it.

finally decided to get around to this lol. babys in a thundercloud is excellent and pale spectator has some old godspeed magic. but eh feels like they lost the juice to me. glad i listened and worthwhile but other then thundercloud the rest feels dare i say pedestrian?

This isn’t particularly good but revisiting F#A# has me wondering whether this band were ever *that* special outside of LYSF (which holds up pretty well to be fair)
feeling spicy today

then again I am pretty hungover, just thought it would work quite well in that context!
(I suppose it’s easy to claim a band is ‘overrated’ or whatever when they’re put on a pedestal by so many 😆… for clarification, at their best they were very good).

F# A# was conceptually brilliant but the songs themselves were not very polished. I still love it, but I can understand why some wouldn't.
LYSF and Slow Riot are their real peak. Yanqui is also excellent. They've never matched that era.
|
| |
Agreed! F#A# never worked for me (except for Dead Flag Blues), Slow Riot and LYSF are where it's at

i feel the same, interesting that is becoming a lot of the prevailing sentiment now. a decade ago here it was sacrilege lol. and skinny fists was called lame crescendo core.
|
| |
I think Godspeed was best at the f# and slow riot stages. Everything after that just feels like rehashes of the same material to me aside from some stuff on yanqui. Like listening to baby in a thundercloud, I knew exactly how it was gunna go after the refrain. Slight alteration on main theme building up to higher frequency notes and.blamo you’ve got a crescendo which is nice but fuck man I’ve heard it before

g_ds pee was pretty good

LYSF is unpredictable enough structurally to not be reliant on its climaxes. I mean GY!BE were unwittingly responsible for hordes of copycat bands. Don’t shoot the messenger tho re Crescendocore, it happened and we shouldn’t play the blame game

i agree but people back then literally called skinny fists crescendocore incorrectly and f#a# was the true thinking mans post rock lol. as you noted it has way more going on.

90% of those people probably didn’t know who Talk Talk, Bark Psychosis, Slint or Glenn Branca were
I mean, as a young un on the internet I didn’t either, in the sense I learnt of GY!BE’s existence first, lol
(post-rock wasn’t JUST reliant on crescendos and the fact GY!BE themselves made it popular shouldn’t be held against them, essentially / and I don’t think LYSF is particularly guilty of it in a blatant way anyway).
