I revisited her catalogue for the review and one thing I noted is how simple were her arrangements and beats compared to the stuff on this record.

I've been revisting PiB just because of how many people here seem to rank it as their rave and, it's great, but I'd rank it pretty low in terms of her discog though. I guess her different sounds really do appeal to a whole host of people with different tastes and backgrounds

Spot on. It's maybe my second least favorite, right after Birth of Violence, but her albums seem to gel with people based on what genres they're already predisposed to

PiB has a shred of a claim to her best because it covers the most ground (maybe more than Abyss)
but it sticks the landing because it packs the lion's share of her overall best songs. backend has two of her best singer/songwriter tracks hands down, Sick thru Reins is her best showing for claustro synthscapes (more than anything on this despite the superior prod, sorry gang), and House of Metal is just a cut above whatever angle you cast on it

I will eventually get to this one. Still on my 70s prog / funk trek.

I’m going through her catalog and this is her best to me. Still need to listen to Hiss Spun though

After listening to this twice all the way through, I think overall, this style of music is not for me. I like her voice and appreciate the creativity with the overall sound, but after the first track, I found myself getting bored. I tried listening to Pain is Beauty as well and couldn't even finish it. Just not my cup of tea.

Fair enough, at least you gave it a chance.

The opening triumvirate / closer are still spoiling the vibes somewhat, but it would be fair to declare that everything in-between is at least an emphatic passing grade...
(A) Place In The Sun
(B) Liminal, Nightshade
(B-) Tunnel, Salt, Unseen
something like that anyway, trending upwards at least

I don't usually comment here and have been a lurker for over a decade, but just wanted to say that this is the fastest I've 5'd any album. I always knew Chelsea had an even better record in her (than PiB and Abyss), but this is just fucking magnificent from top to bottom. I feel like Dusk was thrown into an awkward place on the tracklist but I still like it and there isn't one track that I've skipped since I started spinning this album 2 days ago.
Great review Dewi. You, Raul and Trey are my favourite staff reviewers here.
