I'd like to think my review was just an agent of gravity and that the 4.2 -> 3.2 drop still has further depths to plumb
Agree though re. averages rising. I think this suffered from an extremely poor choice of singles (I fully expected a 1-1.5 in waiting), which ig counts for pleasant surprise probably even potentially inflating some scores. No idea where this will come down to rest, v good bingo card album

Agreed. I was like everyone else, fully expecting to 1.5 or 2 this. I despised We Love You when I first heard it.

I honestly can't pick how or where I want to score this.

The guitar and drums are what carry this.

"which ig counts for pleasant surprise probably even potentially inflating some scores."

yeah this is probably part of it. i and probably a lot of people here grew up with a7x as their favorite band. but their career arch turned a ton of us off at various points. hail to the king in particular seemed to turn people off so much that they never even gave the stage (an actually good album) a real chance until many years later, if at all (including me).

i think the seven year break they took between albums really remedied this a bit. like how can you miss something that never goes away, especially an act as mainstream as them?? couple that with an actually good album that shatters any pre-conceived expectation and you get this. i haven't listened to this much a7x prob since 2013 and i'm really loving it

there's also probably a lot of people in these parts happy that the band who used to wear eye-liner and made waking the fallen but then inadvertently became the biggest modern jock metal band besides ffdp made something so nerdy and alienating again

Yeah alright I’ll eat my own hat.

This is like if Nickelback put out a Mr Bungle record. It’s completely bat shit insane and if there’s one thing I enjoy, it’s a band going bat shit insane.

Two songs deep and I am amazed at what I am hearing. Genuinely incredible stuff.

Yes, G sounds like Mr Bungle but it also gives me strong Zappa vibes- like Overnite Sensation meets Zoot Allures

I admire the ecleticism here, but it's not exactly a cohesive listen.

2 songs in and Mattel genuinely surprised me.

this guy still can't fucking sing though and the vocals are sitting way too high in the mix for that, doubt this will be over a 3 for me for that alone but that's still a shockingly high score for these guys.

intrigued to see where this albums gonna go, here for the weird shit.

Yeah, the fact that the vocals aren't bothering more people is baffling to me. Hot blasts of nacho cheese.

"Cosmic" is incredible

but yeah Shadows' voice is fuckin shot, dude is hardcore struggling on some of these verses. A better vocalists could have really sold this.

i swear its the mix that makes him sound so terrible

there's videos of him singing these songs live where he sounds like his old self... no other explanation why he sounds so bad at points here

And dousing his clearly struggling vocals in effects makes it feel more tacky than anything. I think everyone can agree that Cosmic is one of the best things they've ever done.
