Honestly I'm very hard pressed to think of many bands with a discography as large as The Ocean's where I like every single one of their albums that much.

Maybe like. Isis? The Dear Hunter? Nothing else off the top of my head, even some of my absolute favorite bands have at least a couple of duds in there or a couple I'm not quite as into or never really listen to but I find myself going back to every one of their albums pretty frequently. Aeolian maybe a little bit less just because it's closer in sound to Fluxion and doesn't have Isla Del Sol or Greatest Bane on it.

Aeolian and Heliocentric aren't as good for The Ocean tbh

As for CoL yeah I've loved all I have heard but my fav is Somewhere Along the Highway

CoL is a monstrous band, SATH is my fav and one of my all time faviourite records, A Dawn to fear is also incredible. The centric duo isnt as bad as people say but its not great Anthro has some catchy tunes on it

you could make one real solid album out of both -centrics. something like

Firmament

The Grand Inquisitor II

She Was the Universe

Anthropocentric

Swallowed By the Earth

Sewers of the Soul

The Grand Inquisitor I

Heaven TV

The Origin of Species

The Origin of God

Anthro is great, Helio is eh. Aeolian is my least fav tho, for some reason the vocals REALLY rub me wrong on it.

I have a soft spot for both -centric albums, they are for sure weaker points in their discography but ye I'd pretty much agree with those highlights and even with the weaker tracks I still find myself doing both albums top to bottom no problem. Helio especially gets a lot of shit but damn if Firmament/Swallowed/Origins don't all fuck.

I saw them at Summer Slaughter in like 2013 and I'd only listened to Precambrian so I had to cram both of those albums the day of the show and then Loic and their guitarist at the time who has since quit were both chilling up in the balcony at their merch table just hanging out for most of the sets, it was rad there was like me and one other guy up there who knew them and they were so stoked people there had heard of them, very nice bois.

Ehhhhh. Really ambivalent.

For every point I want to give them for stepping outside the box, I want to dock them one for the album feeling ungodly underwhelming compared with Precambrian or the Phans, especially given this is supposed to be the grand finale.

It feels sterile. On some level, that aesthetic is probably intentional given the themes. But just because that was the intention doesn't make it entertaining, at least to me.

I don't think it's really intended to be epic in the traditional Ocean big-post-metal sense. Phanerozoic II hinted at it with its closing track; this is more of a despairing downfall/observations of a decaying present, which the cold electronic direction encapsulate. The few spikes of pressure ("Atlantic" to "Unconformities") tie that together, with "Parabiosis" and "Subatlantic" being a resignation to unchanging times.

Obviously if it doesn't click, it doesn't click, that's all good. I think the ambiance and especially the horns give this more liveliness than it gets credit for.

Okay, I got my vinyl yesterday and I gotta say, I'm a little irritated.

Don't get me wrong, the package as a whole is beautiful just like their previous releases. But once again, they've left one of the songs off the vinyl for some reason. Last time, they omitted "Holocene" (unless you got the super-spiffy-special edition apparently); I can understand that since it was at the end at felt more like a bonus track. This time, they left out "Unconformities," which is much harder to justify since it's one of the bigger, weightier tracks in the middle. If "Unconformities" was also meant to be a bonus-like track, then they shouldn't have placed it in the middle of the official stream.

Also, they once again didn't include a code for a digital download either. C'mon, if I'm paying upwards of $40 for a vinyl the least you can do is let me take the music with me outside the house.

Sorry, rant over. It's just ultra frustrating when a band with music this good purposefully chooses to withhold things for reasons unknown.

Wait, why the hell did they cut off a song? And this is something they regularly do?

That's... shady.

They always do this so they can keep it as a single LP, but they aren't upfront about it which is super scummy.

As for the digital download, the album is pay what you want on Bandcamp so you can at least download the mp3 for free.

Based. These days I see Salvation as their peak, but wholesome takes. As much as I like these guys, the ‘big 3’ atmo-sludge bands are next level. However, I do think The Ocean sometimes scratch an almost entirely different itch, so that’s cool.

although thinking about it I’m not sure any of The Ocean’s releases would crack my top 15 post / atmo-sludge albums (Precambrian is my fave).
