This is where we've got to with the National in 2025...a 'turdier' ranking?

Would not go so far as to call LAUGH TRACK a turd. In fact, I might even call it 'good' on a day where I'm feeling generous. It is inconsistent and has some duds, but it also has some good (not great, but solidly good) songs like Alphabet City, Weird Goodbyes, Coat on a Hook, Smoke Detector. The coup de grace is Space Invader, which is the only track among their last two (three?) albums that's on par with anything from, say, SLEEP WELL BEAST.

Spun this again today, it’s still forgettable

And damn, after seeing some of these tracks live last year I forgot how languid and flaccid the studio versions were.

Honestly, their last truly great album was TWFM

I’m an SWB apologist and adamant that nothing on that is as bad as Heavenfaced or Fireproof, but respectable opinion

SWB was great. TWFM was transcendental. I'm convinced those days are well behind these guys, alas.

I'm just happy these guys are still making music. The post SWB albums haven't been great but they all contain a couple of worthwile tunes.

I love Sleep Well Beast. Trouble is my favorite of theirs, but Beast felt like it was in the same ballpark.

Everything after feels like a different (worse) band

It is, like I get the deserved hate this gets, but Laugh Track is kinda great.

This review is so good. Makes me wish I wrote more and then retired like this. I always found it impossible (or just not worth it) to try to talk about music objectively. My "reviews" were always just diary entries. I really like the first paragraph.

I had fantasies to write an "I retire" review in the form of a 5 for Pure Heroine but it never happened. Maybe one day I'll drop some truly ungodly blog post on this silly website, one last time.

did anyone figure out what the album cover means? I saw that new Frankenstein movie dropped and wondering if it has any correlation
