Yeah there’s a bit of a false dichotomy there that I didn’t mean to suggest, of course challenging or expanding horizons can lead to emotional connections too; all music is ultimately about emotion and some of the worst music is that which forgets that (and, even if you yourself are not an example of this, I believe many online folks who prioritize boundless exploration and innovation in music forget that as well).
That aside, of course following the Discourse slavishly is boring; I mentioned individual recs too and indeed find those more valuable, esp when they come from people who know my taste well. Fwiw, I also think part of the fun of being a “music dork” is following that Discourse and being able to engage in it, and investing a little more time in “mid shit” allows me to do that.
On the point of Beach House in particular, yeah they’re a bit of a weird case of a Discourse act that’s gotten way bigger than one could have expected they would, though I do think your characterization of them as “vapid songwriters and compensatory overarrangers” is exaggerated; up until their last two albums their music is generally quite minimal. The vapidness of their songwriting is subjective I guess, they’ve never been super creative songwriters and their quality ranges a lot across releases but at their best their music is some of the best at engaging (you guessed it!) emotion; enough that I personally have enough invested interest in them to give time to anything new they make. If they can do that idk how vapid they really can be.

You can tell from the immense amount of pride cole “the cop” creeple takes in “pushing back” against a staff member on the least relevant music site on the web that this feud is the closest he’s ever gotten to “sticking it to the man” in his entire life. You just know he’s bullied by his boss and colleagues at the old folks home on the daily and is projecting his insecurities. Fuck, he’s probably even bullied by the old folks 😭

Dementia Ralph: “Cole you dress like you stay up playing halo online until 4am every day and sweat Mountain Dew LOL”
|

Saddest thing is those same old folks are undoubtedly the closest cole has ever felt to a sense of companionship
|
| |
is the album title referring to the amount of melodies on the album
|
| |
that does sound like beach house

'if you don’t have an ear for arrangements as a whole and production and your brain just latches onto vocal melodies and nothing else I can see how this wouldn’t be for you'
new pasta just dropped cool

'the notion of “overdressing plain tracks” draws a line between an arrangement as a whole and the central melody of a song that is based on arbitrary factors that relate to your own personal taste more than you realize. essentially you need to be spoonfed “uniqueness” in order to latch onto something because your ears aren’t wired to pick up on details and that frustrates you and ultimately materializes as these rants we’re seeing on this page'
colton talking about an inflated sense of importance while dropping condescending comments like this

'this has got to be the most unwittingly hypocritical shit I've seen since skele's last thread. if it's a coded request for me to hold your hand while you go round cleaning up every comment you have ever left on any metal-adjacent thread on this site, I'm gonna have to recommend you upgrade to a full wipe and hit the high road'
i was going to comment along these lines but couldnt really be bothered

Never met someone who hates the taste of his own medicine quite as much as Cole Creeple
I’d say I wonder how sad his life is that having comments deleted on sputnikmusic.com would cause him to spiral out this hard but I know exactly how sad it is. Stay jelly, bitch-boy
