I'd probably feel differently if Core was what I discovered them with and if I was coming into it as a death metal fan because I can see how that album did something really special for that genre, but coming in with SM/Aathma as a prog fan who has only slightly fucked with DM as a genre they were extremely special to me. I think those 3 albums are definitely their peak, it just feels like Metanoia was not at all an evolution for them, more of a playing it safe using all of the sounds we've already established ourselves with.
Nothing horribly wrong with that per se and like I said I think it's still a solid to good album, I just don't see how it adds anything to their sound or brings anything to the table new or greater than what they've already done.

This leans a lot harder on that considered atmospheric approach, it delves a lot deeper into post than they ever have
I find it unique with their discog. It’s not a total reinvention as Mars alluded to, but still.

I don't think this is necessarily simplified--which wasn't what I said to begin with. Does it trim the excess of Spiritual Migration? Absolutely. Does it make the atmospheric forays more purposeful and actually tied to the music in a more meaningful way? Yes. But the tracks are still complex, and they took a sizable risk going down a route that's more prog rock-oriented as opposed to their prog metal/death/mdm roots.
That being said, refinement through simplification is not a bad thing either, and can be an effective way to clean up songwriting flaws and general wankery.

I largely agree with the philosophy, I just disagree that they had any excess to trim in the first place.
I will say the pacing is slightly better and the merging the atmospheric moments was a good move, the only issues I really have with SM/Aathma are pacing and the way having multiple largely atmospheric instrumental tracks breaking up the album derails the momentum a bit, although on multiple listens, for me personally it's not that big of an issue.
Every single thing about the previous two albums that made me actually go "holy shit what just happened" after a passage finished just isn't there on this album though. The riffing and the way the harsh vocals are placed rhythmically are just way more straightforward and don't have that spice for me, and none of the big melodic moments hit nearly as hard for me.

Fair enough man, I think this had a lot of gripping moments that their careful, buildup-oriented approach really made pop. And it could still be visceral when called upon ("Architecture of the I"), just with more variance in that regard.

Yeah I don't disagree with any of that either.
I'd probably have more good things to say about this particular album if I didn't adore the previous too *so* much and if they weren't so like specifically and perfectly coded to my ears/brain for what I went when listening to metal.

Every Persefone album starts at like a 4.5 baseline for me so arguing over placements is usually lost on me lol, I think each of their albums brings something different to the table. Not a single bad one.

I definitely haven't listened to Core enough so this discussion has me back on that and I'm glad because it rules.
I def felt like I'd been under a rock when I found them, easily some of the best guitars music of any genre being produced

It's funny, because I love their proggy tech direction and my entry point was Core. Have followed their progression and think they've evolved gracefully.
