I can't get over how much better this album would be if Days of Future Past was the first track and if they would replace one of the long tracks in the middle for a short one. This would give the second half such a nice flow just like Death or Glory did on Book of Souls.

Second listen is better, but yeah, my rating won't change. Some good stuff on the second CD though.

Senjutsu is a 4/5. I can understand why it opens. Brooding number with toms as the feature sets the scene and prelude to the remainder

Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son [2]

Or you can go chronologically, and see a band evolve with a different vocalist and a raw, punkish approach on the first two albums, and then with The Number of the Beast with their current singer, Bruce Dickinson onwards.

Chronologically [2]. There is no such thing as a non-essential Maiden album.

90s aren't essential imo. you'd lose nothing from hearing those albums

Musically, you're right, their '90s albums are not that great. But how can you skip any album by the greatest metal band of all time?

I know the feeling Doc, I jam Virtual XI quite often haha. I still believe that the biggest flaw of that album wasn't the songwriting.
