I've browsed albumoftheyear a little bit lately and it seems pretty decent, some solid discussion on there

"It's a bit like zoomer RYM"
Oh lawd

Ig the problem with internet-wide aggregates is that it mostly just takes one critic's review for a whole site, so you get a more diverse sample pool at the cost of having fewer actual people

aoty also considers 70/100 to be the baseline for "liking" something
|

"Was really hoping we could troll this album together Gyro but alas"
it wasn't meant to be =[

"aoty also considers 70/100 to be the baseline for "liking" something"
70/100 equates to 3.5/5, and 3.5/5 is the basis on sputnik, so I don't see the problem?

gyro i subscribe to the "technical prowess for its own sake devoid of emotional resonance" line of thought with this one
and ars short of descending into rating increment breakdown in a topical album thread (genre discourse has already been and gone) and disregarding the fact that a 60-69 rating is inherently positive if numbers mean anything, if an album were to receive two votes on aoty, one being 69 and one being 70, it will say "50% of users like this album" which really sort of whacks one over the head with how arbitrary our rating hobby is and is also quite disingenuous considering the aforementioned point re: a 1-100 scale

"lol why"
There were around 3500 comments on the RYM album page last time I checked and, by rule of volume, there was bound to be a lot of trash. An admin probably had enough and put it out of its misery.

Yeah Sput has the same issue, lol.

an excerpt from an aoty review
"As some of you might remember, a few months back I posted a review of black midi's last project, Schlagenheim, which detailed some tales of the many German teachers of my educational career. It wasn't a hugely popular review"

rym hype is really weird now, idk if its a change of username or if I just wasn't paying attention before
who knows, i am glad this core of windmill scene(?) bands are escaping the mad hype on sput though

"70/100 equates to 3.5/5, and 3.5/5 is the basis on sputnik, so I don't see the problem?"
that's completely untrue though? 3/5 = good. 3.5/5 = great

aoty is dead to me because someone said for those I love reminded them of trainspotting tbqh

rym is useful for finding music but their chart system is worse than ours. their top album of 2021 isn't out yet
|
| |
yeah rym for finding music, sput for discussion, aoty for doofdoof
|
| |
Their chart system is fine ya just kinda have to brute-force it lol
|
| |
I think Sput is also better for finding music because if you're on there long enough people sort of get to know your taste and then they rec you stuff. RYM doesn't seem to have that community aspect
