Pretty spent today but will ideally have a review up eventually, especially once theater is done for the season.

I don't have that playlist but if it doesn't have Connector by ALLB it's wrong

middle two ALLB albums, 2 songs from each of DTBM and Happiness-era DGD and like 2 songs off Wake are all you need from Swancore full stop yh

Icarus the Owl? :^(

people listen to Icarus the Owl? they're Stolas-tier for owing all they have to Swancore's popularity (and not the other way round)

Damn, I thought one of my only calling cards was being like the last remaining Icarus fan alongside GreyShadow lol
Mostly joking though tbf, since I really don't think ItO ever fit into the trad Swancore mold such as it were, and likely didn't get as much popularity as a result.

"middle two ALLB albums, 2 songs from each of DTBM and Happiness-era DGD and like 2 songs off Wake are all you need from Swancore full stop"
Not a bad take, but I think there is a little bit more I would add new royal coda, more HtS, more DGD, Secret Band, Icarus the Owl, Sufferer. Eternity Forever on the softer side. Maybe eidola... they are kinda lame though.
The sound of animals fighting, Circa and Fall of Troy could potentially be added, but are not really 'swancore'

"With that said, it didnt strike me as "their most inventive release since Wake". Felt very in the vein of what they have been doing."
definitely not as a whole, but i really did appreciate the vibes of In My Dreams to the end (barring the acoustic track that's just par for the course obviously (not a bad thing!)). i only listened once with Under The Floor on repeat but idk, these feel like a good progression for them rather than just refinement

I will be checking it out more and making a better assessment. The initial run through though lead me to believe i could jumble the track list up with NAF and not notice that they were from separate albums.

Newest has most felt to me like NAF but with a turn towards a more technical style again a la Mental Knife. This alb felt more hook-based and subdued the instrumentals a bit to suit that approach; Divine Inner Tension tries to meet those two records in the middle.
Now all of that is to say that it's still definitively a Hail the Sun album, so accusations of diminishing returns and whatnot are valid. But these guys just have a way of performing Swancore that presses the right buttons; I can take another LP that's the boys operating at a high level and playing the hits, even if the fine-tuning/etc. is marginal.

count me among their ranks lol. I feel weird about calling anything that is exclusively clean vocals "-core" so I think they're not swancore but a lot of swancore fans would probably enjoy them

^ I hear ya, but "post-hardcore" bands can have just cleans, the instrumentals are still there for the -core grouping
I am a casual ItO fan though :-) they jammed when I saw them live!

yeah like i dont think theres a single scream on all of saosin's bug album but i wouldnt really know what else to class that album under

it's hard to call Icarus straight up swancore and mean it
but the funny part is their shit is far more technical/meticulous than all of those bands

Its the noodly, technical guitars + post-hardcore genre that generally define swancore for me. they also generally use and abuse the half scream half sing vocals, but I dont think that is the requirement.
