The drab and simple language of Crow helped deliver idea that sudden death causes ordinary things around us to take on new meaning. Elverum was without answers and probably didn't have many goals for his music.
But I also agree Crow was boring af. And boring music isn't inherently better or somehow managing deeper meaning by being sparse - sometimes it is just bad. I think he figured that out with this newer album; adding an interesting soundscape actually helps drive home the point.

agree with the first paragraph but not the second I guess. Crow is still good. it's not amazing but it's very good. "swims"! the last line ties such a mysterious bow around the whole thing too, and I love it

Agree with pots crow is boring as shit imo. Not the slightest bit enjoyable to listen to, but merits discussion

Listen all we're asking for is that Mr. sad pants, the guy who lost the love of his life and facing deep existential depression, just throw us down some bangers. Entertain us sad man!

Heading into just my second listen, but... this might be a 5. The first spin was devastating and I was not ready for it. Love this so much.

Being caught up in it is the best reason to give a 5.

I dunno about this. Sort of feels like elverum’s insisting on closing the gap between personal expression and artistic expression, and for me that means he’s insisting on a lot of forms that don’t really thrill me (hope you like the ol “two chords” routine) and discarding a lot of the good stuff that wasn’t pointing up his lyrics, which I’m like only 70% sold on. tbh I thought Crow was good despite this but MI2020 and lost wisdom pt. 2 and now only were all sorta duds to me. sort of reminds me of godard’s late career shift into (essentially) essay films
then again I’m not even the biggest fan of Elverum in general, besides the first three songs on TGP2. He’s a very very interesting artist though. Guy did a good job creating a distinctive not only style but also sensibility (the song titles...)

my go to Elverum albums r probably a toss between No Flashlight, The Glow pt2 and Wind's Poem

Agreed with everything robertsona said, with the exception that the glow is imo a near masterpiece.
This album is very tedious to sit through, there's just no meat on the bones, it's far too bare

I can understand feeling it is tedious, because I can't always listen to it. It's a bit of a commitment, but that's also part of what makes it special. It being too bare though? I'm not sure about that.
Yeah, it takes a bit to get going, but I find the beginning entrancing and once it does get going it feels like a short story to me that is easy to get immersed in. Also, unlike Crow, some of the more on-the-nose stuff feels personal in a different way. Lean, but much less bleak, if that makes sense. Maybe it's just that I relate to a lot of the observations he makes here, but a lot of this hits too hard for me to consider it bare per se, but the simplicity of it all lends a lot to the aesthetic which really drives a lot of the lines home for me.
Idk, I'm rambling now lol.

Yeah it's def one of those gotta be in the right headspace for it albums. I was really feeling it the second time I played it while I was out grocery shopping but ever since it's just bored me. Perhaps this is exclusively a grocery shopping kind of record

If anyone made an album to appeal exclusively to one activity, it would be Phil lmao

Haha yeah that's actually so fitting

This album really clicked for me, but I wish he didn't take so long to bring the vocals in. I think if he doesnt wait till 5 min in to start singing, it would have more replay value
