I quite enjoyed this. Listened to 'Stranger in the Alps' for the first time this morning, too. Have come to more or less the same conclusion for both of them: Consistently good, occasionally great, but never quite broaching the membrane of transcendence and maintaining a homogeneity that always becomes apparent at some point. You could take the five best tracks of this + the five best tracks of 'Stranger' and probably make a 4.5 album.
Anyway, still really enjoyed this, think I prefer it *ever so slightly* to 'Stranger' after listening to 'em back to back.

am currently on an ultrapissy mosquito vendetta, and hearing that strained modulated sound that plays in the background during the I Know The End chorus almost made me slap the wall on reflex

tectactoe that's essentially how I feel about Julien Baker (her and Phoebe are in a band called boygenius with another singer/songwriter named Lucy Dacus).
If you took the 6-7 best songs each from Sprained Ankle and Turn Out the Lights, you would have an incredible 50-55 minute album there.
Phoebe on the other hand is a little more consistent imo; about 35-40 minutes of pure excellence on both Stranger in the Alps and this each. I might prefer the versions of "Chelsea" and "Killer" on her Killer EP though.

And here I thought I was the only one!
@Talons, totally agree with that, too - Bridgers is way more "consistently good" than imo Baker or Holter. When Bridgers is coasting, she's still pretty entertaining if somewhat samey. When Baker and Holter are coasting, on the other hand, they border on boring.

On the first few listens, this definitely isn't a let-down but not yet on par with Stranger for me. I love the closing run of ICU, Graceland Too, and I Know the End.

And to chime in on the boygenius talk, Lucy is very underrated in that conversation.

Neek: the word 'emblematic' is silly

Yeah Johnny is a dick, he 'playfully' told me multiple times I would never be a contrib; what a pleasant, silly guy!

Fine I'll admit it: I love Phoebe and Julien, but Boy Genius wasn't very good. I also have no interest in Lucy's music.

@asleep - I chided him with the use of the word “emblematic” in a sentence as a way of rebounding his jab. and typically the use of a smiley face helps avert Poe’s law. context matters 🤷🏻♂️ plus tbf he’s been passive-aggressively defensive of this album and snarking ppl throughout this thread so, uh, foh

I've made the unilateral decision to uncancel you.
