I wish they'd put 'Turtleneck' on this album - right after one of the art gallery interlude choral female vocal segue tracks
Would have 5'd the album based off that. Their GSOH has deserted them :'(

This album has actually given me a huge appreciation of Turtleneck in retrospect - might track 5/5 it lol
Sounds like one final battle cry before entering the God's Waiting Room that is this disc

I never understood the hate for Turtleneck. It's a solid track

it's alright, better than born to beg, worse than the rest.

Born to Beg is on a par with most of this for me, after listening to it again today

not in kansas is a highlight here

I’m still not quite sure what to make of this as a whole, I like that they decided to try something different & although some of it doesn’t quite hit the nail on the head there are a few enjoyable cuts here, maybe more. I’m wary of trying to form a solid opinion too early on with these guys.

Not in Kansas is one of the best so far, I also like Rylan & Quiet Light.

i also like the first minute of dust. everything here works for me lol

“Dust Swirls” doesn’t bother me too much. It’s more interesting than some of the midtempo ballads.
Worst for me so far is “The Pull Of You”, what a mess of a song.
This is growing but I’m feeling a 4/5 ceiling right now which by National standards is a disappointment.

The Pull of You is one of my favs here lol. Love the chorus, though it is a tad cheesy.

It has a chorus? It’s barely a song.

I hate hey rosey, something about that vocal pause is just really grating and unnecessary
|

that's probably my least favorite

Agree on the vocal pause, Matt does that in quite a few places here and I dislike it every time.

definitely think "rylan" is mad overrated (apparently "kansas" too though? i thought for sure people would feel indifferent towards this). "pull of you" is very boring. relistening to alligator earlier, and trouble will find me now, makes me realize how much more i enjoy their other stuff. i wish something on here stood out to me as much as "graceless", "slipped", "i should live in salt" "this is the last time". the highlights here are pretty great but even then idk if they'll endure.

Surprised at the acclaim for Kansas too. It's grown on me but it's still among the weakest here. Roman Holiday is the only time the pause melody doesn't work for me.

I’m not sure “Not in Kansas” works as a song per se but it’s an interesting piece.

It feels off coming on the heels of Where Is Her Head. Halts the momentum completely.

Yeah, sequencing is definitely an issue on this album. Both the interludes are pretty unnecessary but I really don’t like “Underwater” as the penultimate track.
Overall there’s very little here that I’m enjoying without some sort of reservation.
