Mmmhm agreed Gyro, which is why the whole open world thing where individual details are less foregrounded has me on edge...

Idk I just love the gameplay but I like stories that are more streamlined. I don’t know if I’d even say that.
What I’m getting at is I didn’t give two shits about a single character in Sekiro, give me a game with that exact same gameplay and a story as strong as the Witcher or Mass Effect and I’ll be one happy mf

Story on Sekiro shits on both of those

I'm sick of the fast pace. I want more deliberate and versatile builds lkke like in Demon's, Dark, and, despite my hate for it, Dark Souls 2.

“Story on Sekiro shits on both of those“

absolutely not. You mean to tell me you really think that the Shinobi even comes close to Shepard or Geralt? No way man. In terms of story, the only thing Sekiro does better is the villains.

I really don't like the storytelling or characters in Witcher or Mass Effect, so yeah I think Sekiro and all its characters far outweigh those two in story and dialogue.

And voice acting, for that matter

lol if you think that sekiro 'shits' on the witcher then i seriously question your judgement. witcher 3 has some of the best storytelling i've ever experienced in a game. it has similarly awesome worldbuilding to fromsoft games and pulls off the miraculous feat of having side quests that are actually engrossing - sometimes even better than the main story thread.

Yeah Witcher probably has my second favourite storytelling in gaming, only shade to throw is on the main plot itself

the faustian tale of hearts of stone is honestly one of the best things i've ever experienced in gaming. that story is SO well written, and possibly the best dlc i've ever played. i mean toussaint is also way up there because it's an amazing world to explore that also boasts a pretty damn good story, but gaunter o'dimm and olgierd von everec are two of my favourite characters in gaming.

oh my goodness YES thank you, always made me sad that Blood and Wine swept up all the acclaim and Hearts of Stone got lumped with the 'more of the same' brand. That story felt so necessary to the base game, absolutely fantastic stuff

one of the arguments i always hear is that hearts of stone doesn't add much new outside of the story, whereas blood and wine adds a massive new region (and honestly it's probably objectively the best location in the game), but i've always taken issue with that. hearts of stone adds some really kickass locations of its own. i loved going through the sewers to fight the toad prince, and then washing up on shore to fight the olfieri mage. and the von everec estate might be my personal favourite location in the game, with my favourite suite of bosses in all of witcher 3 (caretaker, the wraith in the painting, and iris' greatest fear).

Yeah, the whole shipwreck sequence was fantastic and the estate was legitimately chilling. The caretaker was a masterclass intro and they nailed the whole haunted house atmosphere with a few twists of their own. Toussaint is amazing in a generally quite predictable way, definitely a fan but the whole area has a lot of well-crafted fan service vibes to it

yeah and i'm a huge sucker for spooky things in games, so it definitely appealed to me. i'm not even the biggest fan of the wraith boss fights, but the atmosphere in that one was so good, with the twisting endless corridors and creepy paintings on the walls. same applies to iris' greatest fear, which is INSANE on deathmarch, especially if you try to take them all on at once. i loved how the fight slowly progressed though, with each version being more challenging than the last. really good boss design.

i need to revisit blood and wine again though, i never did go through the unseen elder ending, just the one where you fight dettlaff

what a shite conference

Conference sucked, but there were a couple of things that piqued my interest. Obviously Elden Ring looked very interesting, despite the lack of gameplay. The visuals alone were signature Miyazaki, but I am interested to see what George RR Martin provides to this game, considering how much creative license Miyazaki normally holds over his games. Then there was Phantasy Star Online 2, which is sort of a shocking release if you know the history of this localization.
