"i mean we're talking about a group whose first lyric of first well-known song (not to mention debut LP's artwork) goes There goes my valentine again / soaked in red for what she said, am not sure how this discussion has gone on so long already"

Thats a yikes for me dawg.

hurts to admit it, but it was a little bit cool back in 2006. thank goodness for 14 years of increased obsolescence for the band and increased maturity for everyone else !

@Johnny: ngl I'm pretty sure the lyrics you mentioned are specific to one person, that being his ex-wife who he split from prior to this album's release, and not women as a whole. It was meant as catharsis, sometimes you have to let it out and it wont always be the most pretty picture.

And loath as I am to make this about myself, I don't think I'm an incel just because I wrote the following verse a couple years ago: "What a beautiful mess you turned out to be / Seductive eyes seized control of me / As you drain the world of its sympathy / Forever you have stripped my dignity", as that was specific to ONE PERSON and could be interpreted in more than one way.

Even if that's the case, the balance of righteous agency ( I tried to compromise with open arms ; electing to [let] you go as though out of goodwill) is skewed in his direction, whereas all the inconsistency (First you wanna hate me/then you wanna love me) and destructive actions (You had to try to make a fool of me) are skewed towards his female addressee. The only feelings the song substantiates or validates are his ( I ain't gonna fake it/This is how I'm feelin'), whereas hers seem trite by nature of their inconsistency.

I don't know what went down over the course of his divorce, but the degree with which this is in line with wider attitudes towards women in general throughout BFMV lyrics is eyebrow raising. You had a couple of years to (partially, maybe) grow out of that lyrical voice; this band has had the best part of two decades.

Idk I kinda see what you're saying but I see another side to it as well, maybe that's because of my own personal experiences from prior to a yearish ago. I can't so much as relate to the lines of Letting You Go nowadays and you probably know why, but I could in the past and I'm not that ashamed of it. It's just a learning experience, you live and you learn. Eventually you get over it, but this album to me speaks as an attempt to vent out the emotions he dealt with as he was trying to get out of the hole he was in.

I don't really think I want to "grow out" of that lyrical voice anytime soon, I think I'd just switch the targets more than anything. I would probably still write something like that today if I got fucked over by someone I considered a friend or ally. I dunno. Maybe I'm just struggling to get out of a toxic mentality or something.

Yeah I get you, and I don't think that being able to relate to that voice is anything to deny to yourself or be ashamed about! That shit is equally toxic in its way. My point is more that I have very little patience for lyricists who skew those narratives so pigheadedly in the direction that BFMV (and many bands of their ilk) do - there's a big difference between "it's natural for me to have feelings of resentment and frustration after a breakup" and "these feelings make me feel entirely in the right, so I will indulge them", you get me?

"there's a big difference between "it's natural for me to have feelings of resentment and frustration after a breakup" and "these feelings make me feel entirely in the right, so I will indulge them", you get me?" yeah man I totally get you, i prefer the former mentality anyhow. personally i cant be too picky with my musical choices here tho. this would be just as relatable during that time as say, newer Escape the Fate which doesn't really sound that resentful in comparison.

Fuck, I just realized: "live a better days"? I think whoever transcribed those lyrics was drunk. It's supposed to be "leave a bitter taste", LMAO.

I don't understand how this band made two of my absolute favorite albums in Hand of Blood and The Poison but then managed to fall off a cliff and explode into a red mist of shit.

I partially blame Matt having to get his tonsils removed fucking up his vocals but they became dad rock pretty fast.

TBF the first 5 years of BMFV was nu metal anyway. Then they changed their name and jumped on the thrash-metalcore bandwagon.
