@Futures I did just spin We Are the Romans in full for the first time and it def rules! i did the same for this yesterday and same lol

Converge might be my least fav of the three, but that may be because it's kind of old hat somehow to me, strangely. maybe i'll get over that

whatever the case, wtf was going on in 1999 in extreme noise rock as i'll call it 🤙🤙🤙

edit: Jane Doe was 2001 O_o

yeah idk. most of my insanely unhinged stuff diet in the last few years has been skramz / emoviolence, some grindcore, Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood 🤙🤙🤙 and like, the more gnarly 90's post-hardcore bands like Dazzling Killmen and Today is the Day.

I have spun Jane Doe before, like a musical taste lifetime ago lol.

but yeah the majority of the Dillinger and Botch albums I hadn't heard until yesterday and today.

Jane Doe is different than I remembered. fukin always loved the first couple / few songs on it tho. i actually need to spin it again soon cuz i listened to it in full a couple weeks ago, i wasn't feeling great. was hard to enjoy properly

anyway 🤙🤙🤙

cant get into this properly. i feel the album is below a 3 personally, but that its effect on its genre is big. it just feels like most of the songs are just segments and not proper songs with proper music and riffs

"proper music"

... has nearly 60% prog pie

sure, great album. A lot more accessible than this.

...but if you like prog, then you have the capacity to enjoy unconventional sounds, or should do at least (there are huge swaths of 'prog' that conversely just follows familiar tropes, admittedly). The complexity was dialled back a little moving forward, but the spastic core elements remained to a large extent, they were just compartmentalised and put alongside big choruses and varying other 'softer' styles. Here, the core segments are given room to breathe by the instrumental experiments. They do serve a purpose. 'Proper music' isn't a thing btw.

In short - this is too chaotic for him.

i guess i mean "Proper" in the sense that each track has a definite feel as a standalone track, whereas it feels like most tracks here flow in a really unconventional way that I personally don't love, but i understand if others do

idk i've had a much easier time getting my friends into dillinger than van der graaf generator. and this albums just chaotic, i'd already been into like 80s hardcore/whatever normie metal was going around in the early 2000s and this clicked immediately. iirc one of ben weinmans main influences was mahavinishnu orchestra/john mclaughlin, so there isss prog dna here.

Saw this live last night and it was one of the best shows I've been too. And I am kinda surprised Ben Weinman is still jumping off everything.
