Iirc combination of quantity + score of ratings, but also comments in review threads count towards it as well.

3rd on trending albums, crossing all genres. 1st on charts (sorry i didn't explained to well).
however, when you enter any metal album review you see another section of trending albums that are not coherent with that first list you were talking about.

Perhaps they're weighted more heavily than others idk, though the "best new music" section is based only on contib and staff ratings as far as I'm aware
