This record is, in short, a total return to grace for the boys from Orlando. Now I will admit that I actually enjoyed Silence in the Snow and appreciated that the band made a conscious decision to try something completely different (in the vein of 80's quasi-operatic metal) but I'd be lying if I didn't also say that I was hoping for a return to the Shogun (or even In Waves) sound for that record.
Well, suffice it to say that Trivium is fully back to the sound that made them what they are back in the mid-to-late 2000's! Don't bother with the "I'm too metal to like gay ass Trivium" commenters on this board; the fact of the matter is that The Sin and the Sentence is a fantastic record that has only one true misstep from my reckoning (Endless Night, which itself isn't bad but is obviously trying too hard to satisfy the radio crowd).
Everything else on this album ranges from really good to fucking incredible. Alex Bent's drumming is easily the best I have ever heard on a Trivium album, its flat-out the heaviest album they have ever produced (even more so than Ember), the rhythm riffs are outstanding as are the solos, the bass playing is Paolo's best ever, the scream/sing ratio is just about dead-on perfect, and the vocals are really good overall (the best effort by Matt on any Trivium album).
I also have to really commend the song-writing on this album. It isn't as proggy as Shogun was, and though The Revanchist is excellent, I really feel an epic like Shogun's namesake closer would've put this album over the top in terms of overall Trivium album rankings. Still, there is just a LOT to love on this album (if people can actually give it a chance without preconceived notions about the band swaying their opinions).
Its not a perfect album by any means (there really is no PERFECT record, let's be honest here), but the good-to-great on this record just blows away any of its few real flaws IMO. Its not a 5/5 ranking, but neither is it anything ridiculous like a 1-2/5 ranking either. Give it a spin for yourself, forget about any feelings you have about the band overall and judge it for what it is, and then decide if its for you. If you still honestly don't like it (without breaking your keyboard to call it "angsty metal for teenagers) then that's fine. But I'm betting most people who give it a fair chance are going to come away at least impressed with the direction that Trivium went with The Sin and the Sentence.
I know what I think and that is that this record is a masterpiece!

Not sure what side of Trivium you liked based on Ascendancy, but if you like the heavy shit I'd rec "Thrown into the Fire", and "Beyond Oblivion" if you like catchy stuff.

Finally gave this a listen. I'd set it between a 3 or 3.5. I think it is a bit too long.
