I think the landscape of first impressions would be different if this hadn't leaked so goddamned early, and maybe if he hadn't released so many singles. Both of those allowed there to be a lot more conversation of this before a lot of people had heard it, which inevitably impacted how people approached it and likely led to a lot of confirmation bias, and also a compounding of the negative repetitions. If you see a 1, you're more likely to give out a 1 too.

The ways in which you guys are trying to justify why this album is terrible is just hilarious. "It's MEANT to be terrible so it's actually good and witty." It's actually just terrible based on any merit. I'm no stranger to his "persona" (which I think is a genuine represenation of himself at this point), and I liked his previous albums. This is just trash on every single level

I didn't listen to any leaks or advance singles (I never do), nor did I read any conversation regarding the album before it arrived in the mail. So you can blame what you want, but the album is still trash.

I didn't say nor do I believe that it's meant to be terrible. I said it's meant to be divisive. He knows he has a lot of haters so he went to the max with this, partially to mess with them, but at the same time I think he genuinely was trying to make his art as he wanted to make it.

Opinions are opinions, and I respect yours even though I disagree with it. I just don't want to have to feel like I need to justify my enjoyment of this every step of the way.

It's not even just his lyrics or persona that's trash, though. The instrumentation is some of the most boring shit, and it's all built around his shitty Twitter rant lyrics.

Boney your summary of the varying reactions is incomplete. You're missing that the haters are also deriving a positive experience out of influencing the conversation around this record. It's amusing to see the backlash to the backlash; I dropped this to a 1 because of Flag's hysteria about the ratings earlier.

It's always funny when someone who has never had a unique opinion in their life accuses other people of herding.

I'm not justifying "why this album is terrible" - I genuinely think you didn't read what I actually typed.

"growing on me at an uncomfortable rate" . . . haha, I know that feeling. I was comfortable giving this a 3. At first it was a lyrical disappointment after 'Honeybear,' and seemed to be bloated with filler, but there was something about it that intrigued me. So I listened more--and the more I listened the more it grew on me.

You're right Lucid - that just makes it worse though really, those who are gaining a positive experience out of hating this are exaggerating how bad it is just because they want to hate it and to seem contrarian. The people doing that are the ones who are really getting played by Tillman. (I don't count you among those as I know you actually have more moderate feelings on this and your dropping it to a 1 was just a joke.)

Yeah, you're justifying him being an asshole. I was just trying to make what you were saying less shitty on the human virtue spectrum.

not justifying in the sense I agree, but explaining why it can be a successful marketing strategy

you're free to hate him for it, we're free to hate him for it as well but still enjoy his vocals and dickish, self-centered lyrics

musically there is not much going on here, agreed

Ok, that's just rude.

Also I wasn't just saying that people were herding but making a genuine point about confirmation bias - that might not apply to you but it's definitely a factor for some. I'm probably a victim of positive confirmation bias too, of course. But here I am trying to understand where you and others are coming from and you're just shutting me down.

Maybe there's not a lot "going on" musically but I still think it's pretty enjoyable from that standpoint. There's quite a bit of pretty instrumentation. There are a million other folk records out there that are equally or even more musically plain than this is.

Okay biggest reason why this album sucks for me is that I absolutely abhor listening to successful people whine about their problems. 100% biggest turn-off in music for me, and this album is 75 minutes of that. The fact that all his ranting and whining is diary-style entry and completely centered and limited to himself multiplies that abhorrence. I don't care if he knows he's being ironic or knows he's manipulating people (again, shitty on the human virtue scale), he sounds like a whiny crybaby bitch and I can't relate to that and I'll never enjoy it.

I'm not personally arguing against this at all - I can totally see this being a justifiable 1 for anyone. It's insanely self-aware and it's bloated/often boring. I enjoy his vocals and his biting cynicism, regardless of where it's directed. For me it's a 3.5.

youve gone too far now sowing :o
