Averages are blah. Hunter was a 3.5 at best. Once more was 2.5. This is 4.0. Better than the last but what I think The Hunter should've sounded like.

Roots Remain warrants a 3.5 for this alone.

AND THE EARTH OPENED UPO AND SWALLOWED US ALL

But seriously, Roots Remain to Ancient Kingdom alone elevates this album far above 1.5

It's a little bit out of place, but I really dig Show Yourself.

I love Show Yourself. This is easily Mastodon's best since Crack the Skye.

Pretty good album so far (listening for first time - both to this album and to Mastodon). "Roots Remain" is excellent. This could be just the spark I needed to get into more metal for the first time since, like, 2010.

I'd definitely consider Mastodon a gateway band for diving deeper into metal music sowing.

I used to be really into all the Metallica albums, a decent amount of prog (DT, Symphony X, that kinda shit), some embarrassing metalcore (although early ATR is still my jam, esp. Fall of Ideals...same for early A7X), would JAM Opeth every day esp. Watershed (don't know why, that one just stuck with me), and I'd dabble in black/folk metal (mainly just Agalloch on repeat).

Something about this has that classic metal appeal though; definitely an easy 4 for me on first listen and could grow. Don't think I've properly enjoyed a metal record quite like this in years.

I think Mastodon nailed the atmosphere on this. They've always had face value excellent tracks, with great musicianship and riffs, but the last couple albums have been very flat compared to their earlier work.

Just finished. Really an incredible album. I don't listen to much metal but this is easily my favorite in the genre for ~ 3 years.

Sowing, for the BM part you can give Enslaved a try, they were my gatway to make BM more accesible

Hmm...thanks, will give that a try. My experience in BM thus far, however, has just made me want to go back and listen to The Mantle. Hopefully this will be different enough!
