Yeah, sorry, I do have a tendency to generalise. I do know plenty of people who are your age who are into the older stuff, so again, my aplogies. I was just on a bit of a rant there.
Good on you, too, for not flaming and generally being cool in response to a fairly inflammatory post.
I don't expect them to make the same music, I've enjoyed all their stylistic changes up until now. I just think this one was uninspired, and felt more like a need for them to try and 'get with the times'...when will they learn, they're Metallica, whatever they do will kick ass, as long as it's genuine and from the heart.
To be fair, Hetfield does sound exceptionally angry and powerful on here, and I do enjoy Frantic and the title track.
But Kirk and Lars seemed to be bored (particularly Kirk), and they suffered by having Bob Rock on bass, IMO. Hopefully the new stuff will have a different energy now that Rob is tearing it up.
Anyway, my usual long rant here, but I gotta say, even iffy Metallica is better than 95% percent of the crap out there.

St Anger dissapoints me, as in my opinion Hetfeild sounds like complete shit on most of the album.
And what happened to kirk's solos????????
this was experimental, and i think it didnt' come out right.
the best songs are definetly Frantic and the title track

In Some Kind Of Monster (which is great, by the way. The movie, not the song. Never the song), they have a big discussion where they dismiss the idea of solos on this album, and Kirk gets all vocal and concerned. It's literally the only time he looks like he gives a shit during the entire movie, and Lars and James shoot him down in flames. He agrees with them and goes along, but I think you can tell he didn't really like it.
And what I meant was that Hetfield sounded powerful and re-energised. There were times on Load and Reload where it felt like he was going through the paces. The way the vocals are recorded isn't very good, but I reckon you can still feel the anger coming off him.
But yeah, an experiment that backfired is about right methinks.

I haven't heard this in a while because I accidentally stepped on it, but I think my opinion of it would be higher than it was when I last listened to it.
I still have the title-track though on my xbox, and I like it quite a bit.

This album belongs to the group of all the other albums metallica made that weren't very great.
Load, Reload, and presenting...
St. Anger!!
There are some songs that I like, but I prefer the old school metallica.
I'd rather listen to this then rap is all im gonna say.

METALLICA WILL BE RELEVANT FOREVER!!! they rock the best band ever! but i agree some of these tracks suck. wtf is going on with the st anger track? it sounds like something out of slipknot minus the screaming! but some kind of monster is ok, if it had a solo it would be pretty good

Hahahaha, 'Kripes' were you one of those guys in the dvd Some Kind Of Monster who was breaking all of the metallica records in the napster scene?
Those guys were sooo funny. What losers to trash a cd.

In my opinion, this album wasnt crap, but, it wasnt good either. I dont mind listening to it, but, I am not the person who when I bought the cd, i listened once and let it collect dust. I play it from time to time, usually Frantic or Amber (Yes, im one of the few who likes that). The production was crap, I agree with that, could have done much better, but, they could have done worse aswell.

I'm in support of Lars having sued Napster.

Though I cant say im fully innocent of ever downloading music, I do also support Lars suing Napster. Metallica was one of many bands that wanted to stop this, but they had no idea how much it would backfire on them.

Metallica deserves plenty of respect, but this albums trash They obviously could do better, and this album started to downword spiral into the garbage. To consistant and repetitive, and wayyy to mainstream.
2/5

Stand-out tracks for me - Frantic, St. Anger, Dirty Window, Sweet Amber, The Unnamed Feeling and All Within My Hands. Yep, I like this album. Long and overly pretentious indeed, but that's the only gripe I have with it. That and Purify.

I quite like some kind of monster and the unnamed feeling. Other than that It's a very weak album, and this 'new sound' is nothing to get worked up about.

Songs were not exactly inspired and it got old pretty fast

its weird, all my friends love some kind of monster with a passion but it just doesent do it for me...

I don't know if anybody's mentioned it before (cos I can't be bothered wading through 20 pages of posts to check...truly this is the thread that will never die), but on the bonus DVD that features the band playing the entire album live in the studio, many of the songs sound way, way better than the 'finished' versions on the cd.
They sound tight, and hard, and have that familiar crunchy metallica tone we all love. And the drums don't sound like grandma's old biscuit tins being assaulted with an eggbeater.
I guess my point is that the fundamental problem of this album is that it's horribly produced, to the point where the few decent songs on here are leeched of their energy and vitality.
Somehow I don't see Ross Robinson improving the situation much.
