I feel an album with a high average gives people much more pressure to follow suit with a high rating, than to rate it really low for the sake of of being contrarian. Even if they didn't enjoy a 'classic' that much, they might give it an overly generous rating because they fear they were missing something, and feel the fault in fact lies with them.
If rating an acclaimed album 1 or 1.5 can be dismissed as just being contrarian, how is rating it 4.5 or 5 not just being a sheep? How is one rating more valid than the other?
How about we don't call people a) edgelords or b) slaves to the popular opinion, and just let them rate shit however they want
