I think this is really well written and a classy record but flakes nailed it with the problem being the lack of hooks, especially vocal ones. I don't think it would be a problem for any other artist but when I turn on a devy record I've come to expect mammoth hooks and this leaves you somewhat numb. But again it's very well written, probably deserves the 3.8 average I'd say

Ocean Machine starts like fun rock/metal made in neo-tokyo and evolves into epic fanfarria odissey disintegrating into the heliosphere.

That whole instrumental section in secret sciences after the solo and before the "well some will go and some will stay" part is absolutely sublime

The whole, "I see, I see you, I'll never follow, I'll never follow lies" part in the title track is so stunning.

This is a definite grower, I think. I started out liking it more than 'Deconstruction', and now it seems like maybe it would have been better as a Devin Townsend Band album (instead of Project). Most of the Project (outside of 'Ghost') is defined by fun, fast-paced, wall-of-sound tracks that you're not supposed to take seriously. This is something else entirely--a mid-tempo, metaphysical march that methodically pounds into you over and over again.

Took a while for me to catch the difference, but now I adore it.

That's an interesting take on this album. But I disagree about the Project. Ki and Deconstruction aren't particularly "fun" compared to Addicted either. The Project has always been about variety, that's been the point of it from the beginning.

He just does whatever he wants on almost any album he makes. That's a big part of the reason why I like his music so much. Musical variety is kind of in his nature.

Yeah, he's definitely one of the most diverse musicians around. He's just a little stuck in that super epic fun metal sound that he's been doing on Addicted, Epicloud, and Sky Blue for the most part (the latter significantly less). I think that's what made Casualties of Cool such an imporant record - it was just what he needed to do, a stripped-down album. Let's see how his current project is working out.

Well...by fun, I meant silly. You know, not meant to be taken seriously in any way. 'Deconstruction' remains his heaviest album in the project, but the album is supposed to be a deconstruction of a prog metal album that takes itself too seriously (so I've been told), so they sing about cheeseburgers and things.

On 'Transcendence', every song except "Offer Your Light" has around the same tempo, and whether or not he means to poke your brain with his lyrics, they're definitely not outright silly or "fun."

(Actually...looking at the lyrics, it's kind of amazing how little unique lines the first three songs have in them)

I forgot about 'Ki', though, which I always do. I've never actually heard it.
