"i think being sensitive about whether or not it's "tasteless" is about as counter-productive as you can be when discussing these topics and is more than anything missing the entire point. you find it tasteless for a very good reason. it's a good up front kick."
i dont need anybody reminding me about how awful US foreign policy is, much less some pretentious white american musician considering how it affects my own family and people. its tasteless because its tasteless and thats being very polite
u dont need to tell me whats productive or counterproductive as if i dont have intimate knowledge of this shit. its precisely because of this presumptuousness that these lyrics are so bad. u already had ur mind made up about these lyrics before u even read them and ur tryna regulate which criticisms are valid or not, foh

Nothin about what she says on here is all that bold, I see these exact same things being said in moe depth on reddit circlejerks. It's what happens when you try to balance "political depth" with pop music, if you screw up the lyric portion of it then it comes off as very superficial and dense. Like obama, for example, nothing she says is anything I haven't seen said before by people on facebook at the most basic surface level it is written. So I take and learn absolutely nothing in the long run.

im not against the ends but the means, hence the term t a s t e l e s s. its not that crazy dude, i dont have to like the lyrics because of her intentions (which are rendered questionable by their delivery anyway)
ive seen people bring up that she's bringing awareness which is such a moot point because her target audience is hella niche and are typically the type to already be familiar the very surface level talking points as clove mentioned. she's essentially preaching to the choir

Also i think its totally chill if you like the record for the sound or whatever, its chill. but ive seen questionable praise being brought up by friends, critics, and people in this very thread that just make absolutely no sense to me. and with them, the things Anohni has said about pop music and the subject matter here, and the fact this album's tone suggests its meant to be very serious it leads to me taking more aspects (like lyrics) more seriously than other albums of a similar nature... thus why I dislike this a lot more than what most people would if the RYM average was anything to go by.

"My entire point here was wondering how people were so put off by these lyrics enough to 1 the album"
I agree with this. If that's your sole conclusion, then just don't rate it imo.
More generally CL0VER and Key are right here in my opinion. The content of the lyrics doesn't piss me off. I just think they are far too basic to be hailed as anything other than mediocre and people seem to be eating up these cringy tweet-ables as revolutionary.

I agree 4 degrees works in that slams context, but most of this sounds like really "romantic" sounding music (her words in relation to Drone Bomb Me) so I don't really see it.
